Upload season 3 potential release date, cast, plot and everything you need to know

Upload spoilers follow.

In Upload season two, Nathan’s (Robbie Amell) afterlife proves to be even more confusing and jam-packed than most people’s actual lives… and it seems things are only going to get more complicated.

A will they/won’t they romance? Check. An ex-girlfriend refusing to let go? Check. A victim in a murder plot orchestrated by a political puppet master intent on taking over the world? Overwhelmingly, check.

A premise that while extremely futuristic, chimes irresistibly with that Black Mirror-style sense that this is really only moments away from possibility, and extremely relatable even if the tech isn’t there yet? We’ll stop saying check now.

Upload season two’s cliffhanger finale definitely left us with a lot of questions, and even some lives, hanging in the balance. And it’s the kind of life-ending moment that even CTRL+ALT+DEL won’t fix.

Good news! As of May 2022, Upload has been confirmed to return for season three.

In a statement celebrating the show’s renewal, Amazon’s Head of Global TV Vernon Sanders wrote (via Deadline): “Upload has become a bonafide hit that continues to be one of the most watched comedy originals on Prime Video. The series continues to connect and provoke endless possibilities for the future of technology and humanity.

“With Greg’s distinct comedic take along with the dynamic creative team and talented actors, they’ve made a globally relevant series which we’re all incredibly proud to bring back another season for our customers.”

Writer Greg Daniels had made no secret that he had hopes for more episodes, even admitting to being back writing season three before the second season even aired.

At the time, he was also writing Netflix comedy Space Force, which has now been cancelled.

Talking to Collider ahead of season two’s release, Daniels explained: “I’m in the middle of writing season three with the room. We’re halfway through. So, I have strong hopes that that one is just going to keep rolling forwards.

“I mean [Prime Video] are very excited about the second-season episodes, and that’s one of the reasons why we’re deep in the writing of it… It’s a very visual-effects-heavy show, and so even though we shot it before Space Force, it’s coming out the month after Space Force because so much visual-effects work makes the post process very long.

“So they really want to get on it so season three can happen as quickly as we can make it happen.”

On confirmation the show will continue, he said in a statement: “I’m thrilled to continue the story of Nathan and Nora and the other residents of Lakeview and near-future America as they try to have fun and do the right thing in both the real and virtual worlds.”

Filming schedules are almost guaranteed to be complicated, with key cast members taking on new projects. Notably, Robbie Amell who plays leading man Nathan has been cast in the upcoming season three of The Witcher.

However, production started on August 18 (via Midgard Times) and is expected to wrap in November. Series stars Amell, Andy Allo, and Owen Daniels confirmed the start of production via their social media channels.

Upload season 3 cast: Who will be in it?

There are three key players for Upload, so you can expect them all to come back.

Leading the show is Robbie Amell as tech-whizz-turned-dead-guy Nathan, who is now (kind of) back to life and living in the normal, non-virtual reality.

Then there’s his romantic interest Nora (Andy Allo), the virtual-reality worker who has turned to the anti-tech movement The Ludds on the advice of her father. However she’s proven to be quite the leader and is now near the top of the anarchist group.

Nathan’s now ex-girlfriend, Ingrid (Allegra Edwards), also isn’t done, and continues to go to extreme lengths to keep him around. Pretending to upload into the virtual Lakeview reality in order to remain close to him, she spent most of season two in a tricked-out scubasuit in a bathtub, which allows her to live in Lakeview without question.

It’s likely if we return to Lakeview we’ll see more of Kevin Bigley, who plays Nathan’s ‘bestie’ Luke, and Owen Daniels, the long-standing AI Guy whose face is literally everywhere within the system.

Nora’s best friend Aleesha (Zainab Johnson) is also likely to make a return, depending on where her alliance falls in her job as an upload angel, and her friendship with Nora.

Jeanine Mason has joined the cast of Upload season three, according to Variety.

Mason will appear as brand new character Karina Silva. The character has been described as “a charming senior Horizen executive in charge of new product development and cybersecurity.”

Mason is perhaps best known for her work in The CW series Roswell, New Mexico, the second adaptation of the Roswell High book series, which ran for four seasons. Mason’s other work includes Grey’s Anatomy, Trolls: TrollsTopia, and Grace and Frankie. She’s also known for coming first place in the fifth season of the Fox reality series So You Think You Can Dance.

The actress giddily confirmed her casting on Instagram, writing; “off to ponder the digital afterlife. So excited to be playing with this team. I’m smittennnnn. See you soon! @uploadonprime #UploadTV.”

Upload season 3 plot: What’s going to happen?

Like we’ve said before, season two of Upload ends on a hell of a cliffhanger when Nathan is downloaded into a clone body grown on Ingrid’s instructions.

In a desperate bid to keep him, and realising she couldn’t continue living the upload life, Ingrid paid for Nathan’s body to be regrown in an extremely experimental treatment. It has a very low success rate, with the only wins currently coming from a select number of pigeons.

After realising he had been murdered to stop his potential programme, Beyond, allowing poor people to upload freely, Nathan spent a large amount of season two trying to figure out why.

Turns out it’s for political gain. With uploads not having the right to vote as their lives have technically ended, a sinister company called Freeyond was putting dozens of clinics in swing states to allow the poor and desperate to upload into a new life – and away from voting booths.

If they succeed, it means that hundreds of key votes will keep certain political juggernauts in power.

Turning to the Ludds for help, Nathan decides to download into the body anyway, despite the potential for death, in order to help Nora stop Freeyond before it’s too late.

His plan initially succeeds, and finally together, Nora and Nathan join the Ludds on a train bound to stop Freeyond.

However, in the final seconds, Nathan’s nose starts bleeding, suggesting that his new body is rejecting the downloaded soul. On top of that, realising she’s lost him, Ingrid starts a new power play, stealing hairs from his hairbrush to seemingly grow a new Nathan from scratch.

Season three is likely to pick up immediately in the aftermath of this decision, with Nathan and Nora on a race against the clock to save him before it’s too late.

It’ll also be largely political and away from Lakeview as the gang decide what to do next as they intend to take down Freeyond.

Speaking to The Wrap, Daniels added: “Like Schrödinger’s Cat, when we open the box we’ll see if the cat was alive or dead, but at the moment the cat is both alive and dead you know?

“I feel like it could be played out in a certain number of episodes and then in a certain different number of episodes, as long as there’s constantly enough pull forward and enough reveals.”

“I have to say that the specific details of the mystery plot are something that we worked out over the course of a lot of discussions and planting of clues and different possibilities,” he added.

“I don’t think we’re at the complete end of the mystery, I will just say. In hopeful optimism of a season three, I’m plotting more stuff now with some writers.”

Andy Allo meanwhile has a very specific idea of where she wants Nora’s story to go.

Speaking to Digital Spy, she said: I think I’d want to see Nora become really radicalised in a way and wanting to take down the whole thing. I want some action, go real rebel mode and be like, ‘Rah, let’s burn it all down’.”

“I’m in a tough position to answer that at the end of season two,” added Amell. “I will say that Greg has a pretty good track record for what he does, and I feel like we’re in good hands. Whatever Greg thinks will probably be the best version of the show.”

Just don’t expect things to get too political in season three.

“It’s a world where heaven is only for the very rich, so you can’t avoid critiques of income inequality and billionaires when that’s your subject matter,” Daniels said (via The Hollywood Reporter). “The trick is to not hit people over the head with that and to be a fun comedy show.”

“I would go away to work on something and I’d bring it back, like, this show is not just for Bernie Bros,” he says. “We can’t comment on things this hard. We had to learn to dial it back, hide the medicine, and focus on the comedy.”

“This show is a metaphor for people who live too much in the virtual space,” says Daniels. “It takes place in the slight future, but so much reflects how we live now, how people live for their online presence and that virtual version of [themselves].”
