Studies
Melissa Barrera attended the Fundación Escuela Americana de Monterrey from the age of four to eighteen, appearing in school musical productions such as The Wizard of Oz and Footloose. In 2009 she auditioned for and was accepted into the Collaborative Arts Project 21 (CAP21) at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts.
Television
She returned to Mexico in 2011 after being selected to participate in the Mexican reality show La Academia, where she showcased her singing talent. At the end of that same year, she was chosen to be part of the cast of the telenovela La Mujer de Judas.
From 2012 to 2013 she played the role of Mariana Durán in the telenovela La Otra Cara del Alma and a year later she starred in Siempre Tuya Acapulco, which would be followed by Tanto amor (2015) and Perseguidos (2016-2017).
She appeared in the series Club de Cuervos (2017), Vida (2018-2020) and Acting for a Cause (2020).

She made her film debut in 2014 with the feature film L de Ocio, later acting in others such as: Beginners Manual to be President (2016), The Hotel (2016), Shake off your sorrows (2018), Dos Veces Tú (2018) or In the Heights (2021).
Scream
She played the role of Samantha “Sam” Carpenter in the American horror film Scream (also known as Scream 5). Released on January 14, 2022, it is the fifth installment in the Scream film series and a direct sequel to Scream 4 (2011).
Singer
During 2013 she formed the duo Melissa and Sebastián with Sebastián Martingaste, they recorded an album in which they included the single Mamma Maria, a version of the 1980 song Ricchi e Poveri, with which they achieved some success on the music charts.
In 2015 she recorded Volver a caer, the main theme of the telenovela Tanto Amor and was part of the cast of the musical Hoy no me puedo levantar, a tribute to the Spanish group Mecano.
Marriage
In February 2019, she married the composer and singer Paco Zazueta, whom she met at La Academia in 2011 and to whom she became engaged in June 2017.
