Genevieve Howe Hay received her B.S. in Special Education in Behavioral Disorders and Elementary Education in 1982 and her M.Ed. in Special Education in Learning Disabilities in 1985 from the College of Charleston. She received her Ph.D. in Elementary Education with a Cognate in Learning Disabilities from the University of South Carolina in 1990. Before joining the College of Charleston’s Department of Teacher Education, she taught elementary-age students in general education and special education classrooms in the Charleston County School District. In 1988, she was awarded Outstanding Special Educator for Charleston County Schools for her work with students with disabilities.

At the College, Dr. Hay has been a dedicated advisor and teacher educator. From 1994-2004, she volunteered as a SNAP (Special Needs Advising Plan) advisor and continues to assist students at the College with special learning needs as they make the transition to college. Since 2011, she has served on the REACH Advisory Board, which promotes academic and social inclusion of students with intellectual disabilities on the College campus. At summer orientation, she volunteers as a facilitator for families. Recently, the Office of Undergraduate Academic Services selected Dr. Hay to teach EDLS 100: Learning Strategies, a course designed to promote techniques to help college students becoming more proficient learners.

Her research focus includes strategies for promoting the academic and social success of students with academic, behavioral and health needs in general education settings. In the community, she has worked collaboratively with educators, families and health professionals to develop and implement school and homebound educational services for students with life-threatening food allergies and for an elementary student with pediatric cancer.
