One of the subjects that fascinates me the most is what motivates
people to act the way they do. For me the behavioral approach to motivation
applies to my situation as we have a business with employees. We are always
trying to figure out ways that motivate them intrinsically and extrinsically. The
underlying assumption of the behavioral approach is that it is a function of its
consequences. I liken employees to children, not in a condescending way, but in a
way that we want to praise them for jobs well done and dissuade any bad behavior.
According to this theory, people try to produce positive outcomes in their
organization and avoid negative ones. I always found reinforcement to work with
my kids and I also find that it works well with employees. At a basic level, it is
