Boundary map

This map, published at the beginning of the American Civil War, shows the boundary (delineated in red) between states in the Union and those in the Confederate South.

South Carolina was the first state to secede in 1860.

After Abraham Lincoln’s inauguration as President in 1861, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas also seceded.

Virginia followed after the attack at Fort Sumter in April 1861, and Arkansas, North Carolina and Tennessee shortly after this map’s publication, making a confederation of 11 states.

South Carolina suffered greatly at the hands of the North for its role in starting the War. Union General Sherman wrote:

‘… the whole army is burning with insatiable desire to wreak vengeance on South Carolina. I almost tremble at her fate but feel that she deserves all that seems to be in store for her.’
