Was It Good?

It was fine. We’ve been a little hard on this series since the first issue largely because it lacked that certain something that turns a boilerplate story into something memorable. Perhaps that missing element is charm or wit. A certain X factor. A soul.

Regardless of what exactly is missing to turn forgettable into memorable, this issue is the closest the series has come so far to adding that missing spark. Or, at least it comes pretty close.

This is an “Escape” issue where Brelaq’s final spell causes the volcanic mountain hideout to erupt, forcing everyone to scramble down the mountain to escape. While there’s a teeny bit of bobbing and weaving from the escapees, the major focus of the issue is Bahira’s unbelievably incessant need to kill Red Sonja while the Earth is literally coming apart around them. It’s interesting to see a character so possessed of a need for revenge, they’re willing to sacrifice all safety and sense of self-preservation to see their revenge through. Here, Bahira is infused with an Ahab-like madness to kill Red Sonja at any cost, and the entire scene holds your attention.

While the issue is mostly good, there are some odd bits that throw the issue off. The last scene with Bahira in this issue has an out-of-nowhere twist that’s as laughable as it is eyerolling. Even the characters in the comic laugh at the scene. It was probably intended to be funny but it wound up groan-worthy.

The second oddity of the issue is the art style. We made a pointed observation in the last issue’s review that the art quality dropped significantly after the opening prologue. In this issue, the art quality is still lower compared to last issue’s opening prologue, but it’s consistent all the way through in this issue. In particular, the pencils and inks look rough, somewhere between rushed and sketchy. Technically, you could say it’s a style meant to look rough and gritty to give the visuals a time period flavor, but it’s not great.

What’s It About?

[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]

If you first want to know how the mountain erupted, read our THE INVINCIBLE RED SONJA #5 review.

We begin where the last issue ended with the mountain coming apart at the seams as a result of Brelaq’s final spell. Red Sonja and Tuma barely make it out of the cavern hideout on foot before they’re quickly paced by rock slides and falling trees. Ederik and Zaria ride up the mountain with their very grudging ally, Bahira, to find Red Sonja before it’s too late. Suddenly, the two teams cross paths and Sonja attacks Bahira, ordering the rest to flee before the eruption overtakes everyone. It’s time to settle the old score.

The majority of the middle section of the issue is a knockdown, drag out fight between Bahira and Red Sonja where we learn Breloq’s immortality spell hasn’t worn off yet. Sonja can take an unnatural amount of damage and heal instantly. Before the fight is settled, the mountain opens up beneath them to separate the two. Sonja uses the opportunity to follow her friends, leaving Bahira to be swallowed up by lava.

Sonja catches up to her friends but not before the lava surrounds them. With a desperate push of encouragement, Sonja convinces Tuma that his wings are not useless, and he believes her just enough to fly, taking the prince and princess with him back to the castle.

We conclude the issue with Bahira showing he’s not out yet… until he is, the Prince and Princess finding the Queen in a compromising position, and Sonja going up in flames.

Final Thoughts

THE INVINCIBLE RED SONJA #6 is a mad dash race down the mountain in an issue that feels as close to an authentic Red Sonja as any other issue in the series so far. While the action is tense and non-stop, there are a few eyerolling moments, and the art is serviceable at best.
