Background: The specialty of Preventive medicine
(PM) doctors is a new specialty, therefore identifying the training and
recruitment needs of PM doctors are necessary for students and the university to
have more information of career orientation and to increase the quality of
education.
Objectives: To identify training and recruitment
needs of PM doctors in Ho Chi Minh city (HCMC) for the year of 2015.
Methods: Qualitative study was conducted deep
interviews and focus group discussion sessions based on the semi-structural
questionnaire with purposely selected sample.
Results: Almost interviewees agreed that
students needed to be educated in regularly formal way in six years. After
graduation, they must acquire knowledge and skills of general practitioners and
specialized field of PM, especially in pathology, field epidemiology, planning
skill, communication skill, computer skill and foreign language skill. In
addition, they need to have passion for their jobs and willingness to serve
community. It is estimated that HCMC needs about 120 to 300 PM doctors in
various positions: health program management, general planning department,
faculty of infectious control, etc…
Conclusion: The university needs to train them
more about treating common diseases, enhance dissemination of PM specialty and
let them intern at departments of the PM system.
