General American Donut Company is closing, according to the Indianapolis shop’s social media page.

Friday is the last day, the business announced in a brief posting on Facebook.

“GADCO’s last day will be this Friday, which also happens to be National Donut Day,” it said. “Stop by, say goodbye, have a donut and a cup of coffee.”

No explanation was given for the move. IndyStar reached out for comment.

The craft doughnut shop opened at 827 S. East St. in 2014.

The business bows out on National Doughnut Day. The shop will open Friday morning at 8 a.m.

It drew fans for its creations but also has been controversial in recent years.

In April 2021, the shop posted a sign announcing it was a mask-optional business despite a Marion County mask mandate still being in place. After a county health inspector was dispatched to the establishment, co-owner Adam Perry, said he “misjudged” the area’s mask mandate.

On its website, American General Donut Company ownership has condemned the group Black Lives Matter.

Perry said slow business was the reason behind the move, as he didn’t see as many people working from downtown Indianapolis offices as he did prior to the coronavirus pandemic.

“Maybe 40%, I would guess of the people have come back to work,” he said. “It completely changed the landscape for restaurants and for service industries downtown.”

He said the owners might open another business.
