Announcement

Ryan Murphy announced the theme of the seventh season on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, revealing the stunning game changer that season 7 will be about the U.S. presidential election.[1] In the following weeks, Murphy dropped several hints on his Instagram account about concept art, characters, and themes for the seventh season.[2][3]

Among the actors he mentioned on his Twitter and Instagram accounts, there are Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Adina Porter, Cheyenne Jackson, Mare Winningham, Frances Conroy, Emma Roberts and Chaz Bono from AHS Repertory Company; while Billie Lourd, Billy Eichner, Alison Pill, Colton Haynes, and Lena Dunham will mark their first appearance in the franchise. On July 11, 2017, Murphy revealed the return of Twisty the clown through a photo uploaded on his Instagram account.[4]

On July 20, 2017, Ryan Murphy revealed the theme of the seventh season, AHS: Cult, on his Twitter account.[5]

The story’s title and more plot details were released at San Diego Comic-Con 2017.

On August 2nd, 2017, a campaign was launched to support Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles, home to the Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Diseases. Through donations, it will be possible to win a lunch with Evan Peters along with the chance to get a role in an episode of the seventh season.[6] In addition, it will be possible to have lunch with Sarah Paulson, Emma Roberts, and Billie Lourd too.[7]

On August 3rd, 2017, promotional posters for five of the main characters were released.[8] Further main character names were revealed on August 8th, 2017, for the American Horror Story panel “The Women of American Horror Story” at FX’s TCA,[9] along with some information about the themes of the season.[10]

Unlike the previous season, Cult was announced to feature the main title sequence. It was released on August 21, 2017. This title sequence is the first to use the ‘AHS’ acronym instead of the full title, probably due to aesthetic purposes.[11]

The season marks the first season to not feature cast mainstay, Lily Rabe, despite many rumors that she was to portray Sharon Tate, in the Charles Manson reenactment.[12]

Notes

  • Cult is the first, and so far, only season to feature no supernatural elements in the plot.
