American Horror Stories is a horror-drama television show created and produced by Ryan Murphy. It is a spin-off series to American Horror Story, with each episode being hour-long, contained anthology episodes. The series premiered Thursday July 15, 2021, exclusively on FX on Hulu.[1] A second installment premiered on July 21, 2022 on Hulu. [2]

Premises

“American Horror Stories” is a spinoff of Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk’s award-winning hit anthology series American Horror Story. “American Horror Stories” is a weekly anthology series that will feature a different horror story each episode. Since 2011, the creators of “AHS” have redefined the horror genre with various installments featuring a creepy asylum, a coven of witches, a traveling freak show, a haunted hotel and the apocalypse itself. The television series sprouted a legion of dedicated fans who anticipate what terrors the next chapter will hold.[3]

Plot

An anthology series of stand alone episodes delving into horror myths, legends and lore.

Production

The series was first announced by Ryan Murphy on his Instagram and later confirmed by FX, [17] with FX chairman John Landgraf announcing the premiere for July, 2021 on FX on Hulu.[18]

Murphy announced that the series will feature 16 episodes and that many cast members from the original series will be part of it. The episode count for the first installment was later reduced to 7.[17]

On August 4th, 2020, during a Netflix panel for her upcoming series Ratched, Sarah Paulson announced that she would be directing the series.[19] However, this never materialized likely due to conflicting schedules.

The posters for the first season contain hidden clues to then upcoming American Horror Story/Double Feature.

In August 2021, the series was renewed for a second season, ahead of the first season’ finale.[20]

FX Networks released the promotional poster for Season 2 on June 21, 2022, and released its official teaser on June 30, 2022. The teaser is titled “Die-O-Rama” and it showed creepy human dolls and dollhouses while The Chordettes’ “Mr. Sandman” plays in the background. [21]

Casting

On November 11, 2020, Ryan Murphy revealed via Instagram that many actors from the original series will star in the spin-off. Furthermore, he replied to Dylan McDermott’s and Cody Fern’s comments on the image confirming that both are part of the cast. [17] Ryan Murphy expanded the cast by adding Glee alum Kevin McHale, Pose actor Dyllón Burnside, The Prom‘s Nico Greetham, and Charles Melton, who previously co-starred as Mr. Wu in Hotel.[22]

A sneak peek of some of the American Horror Stories cast was released on social media on July 8, 2021. The video is reminiscent of key elements of Murder House, and shows the credits on a TV screen with eerie interferences.[23]

A sneak peek of some of the cast for the third episode was released on March 20. Similarly to the previous one, it features close shots of tools in a basement laboratory, cast names on a TV screen with interferences, and interactions between Rubber Man and Rubber Woman.[24]

For the second season, the cast was revealed through a sneak peak video. Cody Fern, Max Greenfield, Nico Greetham, Denis O’Hare and Gabourey Sidibe — all of whom have either appeared in episode of American Horror Stories or their own seasons of American Horror Story, or in some cases both — will be back for more scares this season. The video also revealed new actors joining the franchise – Dominique Jackson, Judith Light, Alicia Silverstone, Bella Thorne and Quvenzhané Wallis. [25]
