Wait, what Apple Watch do I have? Since the different types of Apple Watches look very similar, it can be easy to get confused! Whether you need to know which Apple Watch case or band to order, or you’re planning to upgrade to the Apple Watch Series 8, it’s handy to know how to identify which Apple Watch series you have. I’ll go over how to tell what Apple Watch you have, including the super quick Apple Watch serial number check.
How Do I Know Which Apple Watch I Have?
The Apple model number lookup is the most reliable way to identify which series your Apple Watch belongs to, and it’s quick to find. The only downside is that once you’ve found the model number you have to take an extra step to look up that number in the Apple Watch generations list which I included below to save you time. First, here’s how to find your Apple Watch model number:
- On your iPhone, open the Apple Watch app.
- Tap the My Watch tab and then tap General.
- Tap About.
- On this screen, you’ll see a section that says Model. It will contain a number in it, but you’ll need to tap this number to reveal the model number.
- Once you’ve tapped on the number, a new four-digit number preceded by the letter A will appear. This is your Apple Watch model number.
You now have the model number but may still be wondering, “What Series is my Apple Watch?” Your model number will tell you which series your Apple Watch is a part of. Use the table below for easy model number lookup! The table will also answer, “What size is my Apple Watch?”

Apple Watch Ultra
The Apple Watch Ultra was announced on the seventh of September 2022 and will be released on September 23.
Options: GPS + Cellular 0nly
Sizes: 49 mm only
Titanium only: Titanium Starlight.
Other identifying features: Apple’s first “rugged” watch with a new customizable Action Button. The Ultra is designed for extremes: extreme temperatures, extreme depths, and extreme weather conditions. Has a Dive computer and a 60-decibel siren. 36 hours of battery life that Apple claims will be extendable to 60 hours later this fall. New Low Power Mode.
Apple Watch SE (Gen 2)
The Apple Watch SE (Gen 2) was announced on the seventh of September 2022 and will be released on September 16.
Options: GPS and GPS + Cellular
Sizes: 40 mm and 44 mm cases
Colors (aluminum only): Midnight, Starlight, and Silver
Other identifying features: New Temperature Sensor as a way to track fertility and ovulation. New Crash Detection feature that uses new motion sensors that can detect real-world accidents, including head-on, rear-end, side-impact, and rollovers. Always-On Retina display. New Low Power Mode.
Apple Watch Series 8
The Series 8 was announced on the seventh of September 2022 and will be released on September 16.
Options: GPS and GPS + Cellular
Sizes: 41 mm and 45 mm cases
Aluminum case colors: Starlight, Midnight, Silver, and, PRODUCT(RED)
Stainless steel case colors: Gold, Silver, and Graphite

Other identifying features: Largest display size of any Apple Watch generation so far, edge-to-edge with a wraparound effect. The body features more rounded corners and a red ring on the Digital Crown if Cellular enabled. The glass also has increased dust and crack resistance and faster charging speeds. On the Nike or Hermès editions you’ll see the associated insignia on the underside of the watch.
Apple Watch Series 6
Options: GPS and GPS + Cellular
Sizes: 40 mm and 44 mm cases
Aluminum case colors: Space gray, gold, silver, red, blue
Stainless steel case colors: Graphite, silver, gold.

*Important Note: All Series 3 and older Apple Watches will not be compatible watchOS 9 coming in September of 2022. You will need to upgrade your watch if you’d like to operate the most up-to-date software moving forward.
