American Gods is coming to UK TV this May – and with Starz broadcasting the show in the US, the question on everyone’s lips is simple: where can I watch American Gods online in the UK?

Neil Gaiman’s fantasy novel will need no introduction for fans. It has been translated into more than 30 languages since its publication way back in 2001 and bagged an array of prizes, from the Bram Stoker Award for Best Novel to a Hugo. With its epic tale of gods in the modern day, it’s the kind of story that seemed destined to head to the screen – but with such scale and complexity, the small screen always seemed more likely than the big.

Now, after years of speculation, hope and fan-casting, Hannibal’s Bryan Fuller and Heroes’ Michael Green are giving us a TV version – and, to reassure any fans of the book, Gaiman himself is also an executive producer on the show.

“I am thrilled, ‎scared, delighted, nervous and a ball of glorious anticipation,” said Gaiman when it was first announced. “The team that is going to bring the world of American Gods to the screen has been assembled like the master criminals in a caper movie: I’m relieved and confident that my baby is in good hands.”

Fuller and Green added: “Almost 15 years ago, Neil Gaiman filled a toy box with gods and magic and we are thrilled to finally crack it open and play. We’re grateful to have STARZ above us and FremantleMedia at our backs as we appease the gods, American or otherwise.”

What is American Gods? In short, the story charts an epic war brewing between the old gods of biblical and mythological roots from around the world and the new gods, to whom the traditional deities are steadily losing believers.

The gods are brought to life by a veritable smorgasbord of acting talent, from Pablo Schreiber (Orange Is the New Black) as Mad Sweeney, Bruce Langley as Technical Boy, Yetide Badaki (Aquarius, Masters of Sex) as Bilquis and Kristin Chenoweth as Easter to Peter Stormare as Czernobog, the God of Evil, Orlando Jones as Mr. Nancy, the Trickster God, and Crispin Glover as the sinisterly-named Mr. World.

And in between them is Ian McShane’s Mr. Wednesday, who is busy recruiting forces across the country ahead of the conflict. Top of his list? Hollyoaks’ own Ricky Whittle as ex-con Shadow Moon, who is roped into this war. Emily Browning also stars as Shadow’s wife, Laura Moon.

The series premiere is on Sunday 31st April in the US, with the American Gods UK air date confirmed as Monday 1st May. The show will premiere in the UK exclusively on Amazon Prime Video, with new episodes released weekly on the streaming service within 24 hours of their US debut.

Amazon Prime Video is part of Amazon Prime, which costs £79 a year and includes free next-day delivery on all Amazon products. However, you don’t need to sign up to a full Amazon Prime membership to get American Gods: Amazon Prime Video on its own costs £5.99 a month, with no contract, and a 30-day free trial, which means you can technically watch American Gods online for free in the UK, completely legally.
