Video Review: The BMW 428i, a Coupe Not Done by the Numbers – The New York Times
AS long-established as BMW is, its nomenclature can be confusing. Here’s a primer for those unfamiliar with it: Odd-numbered series like 3, 5 and 7 are four-door sedans. Even-numbered models like 2, 4 and 6 are two-door coupes and convertibles. Unless they aren’t.
The 428i Gran Coupe is one of the big, fat asterisks in the Bavarian brand’s attempt at cohesive naming. While the proper 4 Series two-door (formerly the 3 Series coupe) is true to BMW’s scheme, the Gran Coupe is a “four-door coupe,” a dear marketing term to be certain. The Gran Coupe could also be called a hatchback, and its fifth door makes it a sensible purchase. Stylish, too.
Available in rear- and all-wheel drive, the 428i gets a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder pumping out 240 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque low in the power band. The only transmission is an 8-speed automatic with steering wheel paddles for manual control. Don’t frown over the lack of a manual; the telepathic nature of the automatic agrees with the Gran Coupe’s demeanor. Go for the rambunctious M235i if you must have a clutch to depress.
