BMW 5 Series Overview

The BMW 5 Series began production in 1972 and brought with it the new BMW convention of using three-digit names for each vehicle’s model/trim/powerplant. Now in its seventh generation, the 5 Series has had each generation designated internally with a three-character code, which enthusiasts and mechanics often reference when naming a specific generation of the 5 Series versus a specific year and model.

The first-generation 5 Series was the E12, produced from 1972 to 1981. These are now semi-collectible, especially in the M535i performance model. The second-generation 5 Series was the E28, which also introduced the performance M-series as a sub-designation, as well as a diesel engine model. Externally, the first- and second-generation 5 Series have much in common in bodywork.

The third-generation 5 Series, the E34, changed the car’s body styling significantly when introduced in 1988. This series also added the wagon style Touring models and the first models with all-wheel drive as an option.

The new seventh-generation (G30/31/38) was introduced in 2017 and is only found in limited quantities on the secondary market.

The most common models found on the used market are the sixth-generation 528i, 535i and 550i models. These are all gas-enginedm, with six-cylinder and eight-cylinder engines. Complaints on these models are fairly low and they have a reputation for reliability well after their manufactured date.

The 2018 BMW 5 Series adds a plug-in hybrid 530e iPerformance model and a performance-oriented M550i xDrive as new options. The not very popular Gran Turismo hatchback model has been discontinued.

Most well known for its excellent drive dynamics and beautiful interiors, the BMW 5 Series holds that tradition while adding new technologies and more interior space. Notable changes in the new-generation 5 Series are the longer, sleeker look of the car; the immense amount of technology offered and more efficiency. Technology in the 2018 5 Series includes a host of driver aids and safety items, improved infotainment and better performance.

2017 BMW 5 Series

The 2017 BMW 5 Series is all new for this model year and it’s also one of the highest-rated cars we’ve reviewed. The 5 Series carries the BMW flag forward as the best-selling sedan in the make’s lineup, and this year’s updates mean a lot to the car’s excellence going forward.

The 5 Series is most well known for its excellent drive dynamics and everyday usability combined with smart performance. That doesn’t change for the 2017 model, which now sits on an entirely new platform. The new 5 is 1.2 inches longer and just over half an inch taller, but you wouldn’t know it by just looking at the car. Its exterior has been adjusted to give it a lower, sleeker look instead.

Technology is also paramount in this new 5 Series and has evolved to the point that this may be the most advanced car on the road in combined terms of safety, techno-gadgetry and cool “never thought this would be that useful” gear. Unlike other technology-filled cars today, the BMW 5 didn’t gain a lot of weight or become unusable for its mega-screen opulence. 2013 BMW 5 Series

The 2013 BMW 5 Series is in its sixth generation of production and it is still setting the pace as an industry leader in luxurious sophistication. It walks the line between performance and luxury to find a balance that can satisfy even the pickiest of automotive consumers. The 5 Series has spent more than 40 years on the market, in various configurations, and it continues to impress.
