Throne of War

Thrones of War were massive warships of Perish origin, resembling enormous catamarans. Each one was in fact made up of two dromons linked by arching spans above and below the water, creating a catamaran of cyclopean proportions. The ships were propelled by sail or with a double bank of oars on the inward side of each dromon, foreshortened by the spans.[1]

The ships were armed with ballistae mounted to either side of their wolf-head prows and rams on the arched spans below the waterline. A double row of overlapping, rectangular bronze shields were attached to the outer rails.[1] Approximately two hundred soldiers bunked on each dromon bring the total number of troops on one Throne of War to four hundred.[1]

The ships carried long, oared boats resembling war canoes to allow troops to move between ships or travel to shore.[1]

They were well suited to travel in rough seas.[2][3]

Admiral Nok’s Malazan Imperial Fleet cut across the mouth of the Catal Sea carrying Adjunct Tavore Paran’s Bonehunters back to Quon Tali after the Last Siege of Y’Ghatan. They encountered a fleet of thirty-one Thrones of War belonging to the Perish Grey Helms. Mortal Sword Krughava pledged the ships and her thirteen thousand soldiers to the Adjunct’s service.[4]

Dust of Dreams

Shield Anvil Tanakalian reflected that he loved the Listral, the flagship of the Perish fleet and the last of an earlier class of Throne of War, which had fewer, larger cabins and was carved so that the trimaran appeared as the biting maw of a wolf.[5]
