The Visual History of the BMW M3 Coupe, Convertible, and Sedan
Ah, the BMW M3. Love it or hate it, there’s no doubting the fact it’s an automotive icon. Originally built as a way for BMW to compete in Group A rally racing and the DTM racing series, the M3 today lives on as the crown jewel of the 3 Series sedan model line. That’s right, BMW’s once-two-door sports car is now available strictly as a four-door sedan. (Need two doors? The M4 exists as the modern two-door M3 equivalent.) A sedan body doesn’t make us lust for the M3 any less, though, because it’s still a proper M car. But, curious how the M3 went from a rev-happy four-cylinder coupe to a pavement-melting, turbocharged six-cylinder sedan? Click through our visual history of the BMW M3 to find out.
