Rumors have been swirling around

BMW

for years about whether the automaker was going to release a new luxury SUV, and if so, what it would be called—X8? XM?

Cameras have caught two new heavily camouflaged BMW SUV prototypes lately. It is assumed the new X8 will be a boldly-designed, super-sporty, super-luxurious new

SUV

from BMW arriving in late 2022 for a 2023 edition, but there is still some uncertainty.

X8 speculation and rumors

After years of rumors and speculation of either an X8 or an ultra-luxury XM going into production, in the fall of 2021, BMW indirectly announced a new vehicle being built in their Spartanburg, SC plant, which produces SUVs.

BMW confirmed that the X8 and XM were separate projects, with the X8 projected to be a new full-sized SUV picking up where the X7 left off.

An XM is also likely in production, as both names have been trademarked. An

XM concept car

was unveiled last November, which was styled with a variety of color-changing lights, unusual leather seats, copper accents, and an exciting backstage-at-a-rock-concert vibe.

In fact, within the BMW Corporation, this vehicle is known as “Project Rockstar.”

Some guess it could be two versions of the X8—the X8 and the X8M. We just don’t know for sure yet! Either way, it is

guaranteed to be a newly styled, sporty, ultra-luxury SUV offering from the Bavarian carmakers with a steep price tag to match

.

Spy cameras have caught two different SUV prototypes out in the open, wrapped in heavily disguised camouflage.

It appears the X8 is a slightly smaller, more luxurious X7. But, given the look of the sloping roofline, it is likely without the third row, giving the second-row more legroom and the ability to taper the roofline downward for a sleeker look.

The vehicle presumed to be the X8 has a front end that looks similar to the current X7, but with a more prominent hood, different side skirts, hatchback-like tailgate, extra-thick bumper, and a spoiler. The prototype also features split

headlights

, red brake calipers, stacked exhaust tips, and a huge grille.

2023 BMW X8 engine details

The X8 is going to be BMW’s most powerful-ever SUV.

It’s speculated that the X8 will be a hybrid V8 powertrain combined with an electric motor, which will help

increase fuel efficiency

, for around 700 hp.

Autoevolution

says “… it’s been rumored that it will launch with three powertrains, including two plug-in hybrids, one of which might combine the 3.0-liter turbo-six with an electric motor, for a total output of almost 400 hp. The full-blown M variant is understood to use an electrified twin-turbo V8, with as much as 750 hp.”

How much will the X8 cost?

This will likely be the sportiest, most luxurious X model yet, with quite a

hefty price tag

to prove its point! Given that a base X6 M is already close to $110,000, we can safely assume the X8 will be at least six figures, and it will likely be quite a bit above that.

Whether we are looking at an XM and an X8, or two different variants of X8, one thing is certain: BMW is working to get a new high-end SUV on the market within the next year, and soon, all our questions will be answered.
