Sonny Bono goes solo on new single
“Laugh At Me”, the only solo hit ever recorded by Sonny Bono, is far from the quality achieved through his collaborative efforts. Bono wrote the song following an incident where an upmarket Hollywood eatery refused to seat him. According to Bono, it was because he was “dressed like a hippy” – the restaurateurs, in fact, claimed “clown”.
Sonny Bono wrote “Laugh At Me” in 1965, following an incident where an upmarket Hollywood eatery refused to seat him.
The song is an attempted indictment of the superficial nature of materialism, but misses the mark lyrically – ironically, falling short due to the shallow nature behind such vitriol.
Musically, though, it is a pretty enjoyable beat and serves as a litmus test for the necessity of Cher as part of the successful franchise the duo would soon create.
