Season Three is the third season of the Starz television series American Gods. It was renewed for a third season on March 15, 2019 and will consist of ten episodes. Filming began in September 2019 and Production officially began October 9, 2019.
The season premiered on January 10, 2021.[2]
On March 29, 2021, Starz announced that the series was canceled and would not be returning for a fourth season, though the possibility of continuation through either an event series or a TV movie has not been ruled out.[3]
Synopsis

Season Three follows Shadow as he attempts to break away and assert himself as his own man, setting down roots in the idyllic snowy town of Lakeside, WI, where he’ll uncover a dark secret while exploring questions of his own divinity. Guided on this spiritual journey by the gods of his black ancestors, the Orishas, Shadow must decide exactly who he is: a god seeking veneration or a man in service of the “we.” [4]

- American Gods was renewed for a third season just a few days after the Season Two premier with Charles “Chic” Eglee as the new showrunner [12]
- There will be ten episodes in Season Three[13]
- Season Three will begin filming September 30, 2019 and should wrap up around March 6, 2020[14]
- Downtown Port Perry, Ontario, Canada serves as a stand-in for the fictional town of “Lakeside” with filming taking place two or three days a month from September to March 2020[15]

- On December 14, 2019, Orlando Jones (Mr. Nancy) announced on twitter that he had been fired from Season Three back on September 10, 2019.[17]
- Orlando Jones decided to make the announcement himself after receiving hundreds of messages from fans looking forward to his appearance in Season Three[18]
- According to Jones, the decision was up to the new showrunner, Chic Eglee. “All I can say is what I was told. And all what I was told was, ‘angry gets shit done’ is the wrong message for black America, and that the new showrunner [Chic Eglee] writes from a black male perspective.”[18]
- Fremantle Media claims it was because Mr. Nancy and other characters do not feature in the portion of the book that Season Three is focusing on, however, this is provably false since this has never been an issue for other recurring characters in the series who do not appear in certain sections of the book or even in the book itself [19]
- On December 15, 2019, Mousa Kraish (the Jinn) announced on twitter that he had not been asked to return for Season Three but leaves open the possibility of returning in the future[20][18]
- On December 17, 2019, it was announced that Kahyun Kim (New Media) and Crispin Glover (Mr. World) would also not be returning for Season Three[21]
- During an interview with The Knockturnal Yetide Badaki and Bruce Langley explained that season 3 was made of a series of self-discovering journeys for the characters, though they all tied up in the end to the greater journey of the over-arching plot in the end. [22]>
