Here in England, handwriting tends to be very individual with no common features such as those we are taught in school.

Comparatively, European and American handwriting styles seem to retain many of the common features from school.

I have always thought the American cursive script to be particularly beautiful, especially compared to my mid-matched scrawl.

Is a special emphasis placed on handwriting all the way through school meaning that more people maintain the style in to adult life or is it a social aspect which encourages the conformity of styles ?

Edit: I have added examples of what I would describe as the typical scripts. I have lived on the continent in Europe and am therefore confident that my example of the European style is correct. The example of American script is purely based on examples I have seen in print.
