Paid Family Leave for Mothers
Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for PFL benefit payments, you must have:
- Welcomed a new child into the family in the past 12 months through birth.
- Paid into State Disability Insurance (noted as “CASDI” on most paystubs) in the past 5 to 18 months.
- Not taken the maximum eight weeks of PFL in the past 12 months.

Citizenship and immigration status do not affect eligibility.
San Francisco workers: Your employer may have to provide supplemental compensation to you if you’re receiving PFL bonding benefit payments. For more information, review the Paid Parental Leave Ordinance.
Did you know? If you’re pregnant, you can receive Disability Insurance (DI) before your due date and after to recover from childbirth. Visit Types of Claims – Pregnancy to learn more. New moms with an active DI-pregnancy claim will automatically be sent a Claim for Paid Family Leave (PFL) Benefits – New Mother (DE 2501FP) after their final DI payment is issued to transition to PFL to bond with their baby.
