Land of the free and home of the brave. America is also the home of great whiskeys, with American spirits becoming popular only relatively recently, you’d be surprised to know there’s a history spanning over 250 years!

America’s distinct style can be accounted for by the use of mashbills (a combination of different cereals, such as corn, rye, wheat and maize) and the use of brand new, or virgin, oak casks. The former adds a depth and variety of flavour and spice to the base spirit that sets it apart from Scottish whisky (which uses malted barley) and the later adds the sweetness and colour that American whiskey is noted for. With different percentages in the mashbill and varying ages resulting in different styles, such as Bourbon, Rye, Corn, Moonshine, straight and blended, American whiskey is more diverse than you think!
