One Piece: Where Could Boa Hancock Go if She Left Amazon Lily?

The following contains spoilers for One Piece Chapter 1059, “The Matter Involving Captain Koby,” by Eiichiro Oda, Stephen Paul, and Vanessa Satone, available in English from Viz Media.

Chapter 159 of One Piece, “The Matter Involving Captain Koby,” really shook things up for Amazon Lily. Both the Navy and the Blackbeard Pirates invaded the island with plans to ca[ture its ruler, Boa Hancock. All of the destruction these two overwhelming forces caused made it clear that as long as Hancock stayed on the island, its people wouldn’t be safe. Hancock will likely have to leave Amazon Lily to at least ensure the safety of its citizens. As for where she’ll go, that remains uncertain. However, there are at least a couple of places where she’s likely to end up.

Hancock is most likely to gravitate towards her love interest, Monkey D Luffy. She even mentioned her plans to marry the Straw Hat captain in Chapter 1059. This was played for laughs, but that certainly doesn’t mean she won’t try to follow up on it. Many fans are expecting this to be the start of the Pirate Empress’ entry into the Straw Hat Grand Fleet. She could take her sisters and some of the Kuja Pirates off the island and follow her heart into the New World. At the very least, it’s a reasonable assumption that she’ll show up again in the second half of the Grand Line, where all the action is.

Some more optimistic Hancock fans are hoping that this chapter is setting up for her entry into the main Straw Hat crew. After all, they were just getting ready to welcome Yamato, another tall and beautiful woman, before she decided to stay in her homeland; this was even referenced earlier in Chapter 1059. It would be like the bait-and-switch that was pulled with Vivi and Nico Robin, a third tall and beautiful woman.

However, as much as people might want Hancock to join the crew, it’s unlikely. Besides Luffy, she doesn’t have a close enough connection with the rest of the crew, and her condescending attitude is too nasty to change that. Besides that, there are plenty of other minor reasons that make her boarding the Thousand Sunny difficult to imagine.

If Hancock doesn’t end up sailing under the Straw Hats’ flag, she could also end up sailing under Cross Guild’s. One of the big benefits of this organization is getting the Marines off of the backs of deposed Pirate Warlords; that’s precisely the kind of protection the Pirate Empress needs right now. She might seem too prideful to work for or even with somebody else, but so did Crocodile and Mihawk.

Wherever Hancock ends up, all her paths will likely lead to Luffy sooner or later. This will probably happen whether she joins the Grand Fleet or Cross Guild, or even the Revolutionary Army. As long as she’s on the move, she should find her way back into his story, especially now that he’s a major figure in the New World. As for whether she’ll marry him like she keeps on saying, that’s a conversation for another time.
