Description of forming North American Union

The North American Union (or the NAU) is a formable located in North AmericaNorthAmerica.png. It requires Canada, the United States, and Mexico to be formed.

It is one of the five continental formables, the others being the United States of South America, the European Union, and the African Union. However, it does not include the entire subcontinent of North America, excluding Central America, the Caribbean, and Greenland. The only 2 nations it borders are Guatemala and Belize.

Background

Since at least the mid-19th century, numerous concepts for a union among Canada, Mexico and the United States of America, some including the Caribbean, the Central American and the South American countries, have been proposed, such as the North American Technate. Following the Maastricht Treaty and the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) going into effect in the early to mid-1990s, there was speculation about the formation of a North American Union, similar to the European Union created by Maastricht, being a possible future step for the region. Several proposals for continental integration of North America advocated the creation of a union styled after the European Union, though many academic and business groups advocated less dramatic changes involving the formation of a customs union or common market.

Modifier

Forming the North American Union grants an indefinite formable modifier called: “Unity of North America”. The modifier adjusts the following:

Base Statistics

The base economy of the North American Union without development is enormous and one of the largest in the game, although how much the player will earn will vary based on the nation played and its ideology.

Resources

The North American Union does not produce enough titanium or phosphate to be self-sufficient, although it is rich in many resources, such as Iron, Copper, Gold, and Oil.

Military

The N.A.U. gains over 20,000 manpower once formed, it also starts as volunteer conscription on all nations it starts as.

Geography

There are several large mountain ranges within the North American Union, the foremost being the mountains of the American Cordillera. The Rocky Mountains, the Cascades, Sierra Nevada, and Sierra Madre Oriental and Occidental and several other minor mountain ranges make a long unbroken chain of hilly and mountain terrain in the western part of the North American Union. This chain of mountains ends in the north with the Alaska Range, a patch of mountainous and semi mountainous land which blocks off most of eastern Alaska and extends into the bordering Yukon province of Canada, and terminates in the south near the end of the Gulf of California in Mexico’s western Pacific coast. To the east and the west of the American Cordillera there is only flat plains until you reach the Pacific and Atlantic coast. There are minor hills on the Appalachians, inland on the east coast.

The Mexican Plateau dominates the southern part of the NAU and is bordered on all sides by mountains, forming continuous semi mountainous terrain across Mexico from the US border to the north past Mexico City to the south. Baja California is more forgiving and becomes hilly once you pass the northern tip of the peninsula. To the south of Mexico City the terrain flattens out into plains that go on until the border with Guatemala.

The Great Lakes are the only major body of water contained with the NAU. There are three ports which you can use to build ships on the lakes, although the Saint Lawrence Canal is absent, so you are unable to sail any ships into the Atlantic Ocean.

Biomes

  • Mexico is arid and semi-mountainous in the north, and in the south, there is jungle and some hilly terrain.
  • The US is arid and semi-mountainous in the west and is plain in the east.
  • Canada during winter is marked as Severe Winter, and the north parts of Canada are Arctic. It is also hilly in some areas. With the new update, you can train infantry to be specialized at 3 biomes: Winter, Arid, and Jungle. If you are invading Canada you want to make sure to train your troops for winter specialization, and if you are invading Mexico you want to train your troops for arid specialization.

Population

The North American Union has 1,211 cities and a population of 372,607,296, making it the largest country by population in the world. The North American Union contains some of the world’s largest cities, including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Mexico City. Several United States cities (notably Houston, Dallas, Los Angeles, and San Francisco) have unique urban layouts of several dozen small suburban cities, clustered in close proximity to a central major city of several million people, which could serve problematic during an invasion as the enemy can send troops to a large city, and have the troops automatically capture the small cities simultaneously.

Forming the North American Union is a simple task if one starts as the United States, and it is the only formable the United States, so it is extremely common. It provides a good stability boost and additional resources as well as a large population increase, enough to turn the United States into the #1 ranked superpower by population easily if China is not similarly expanding. The main difficulty with forming the NAU as America is defeating a stubborn Mexico player, especially if they have Brazil or another wealthy major as an ally. However, if you play Mexico or even Canada, it is extremely difficult to defend or even win against a US player, and winning relies on as much luck as planning. It is very rewarding and a rare achievement to lead a Canadian or Mexican NAU. One other thing you should look out for is Russia or China because later in the game they may come after you, although this doesn’t happen too often. But if it does you might want to ally powerful European countries such as France, the United Kingdom, and Germany because it can give you and the allied player a power boost in long term war activity. If you ally all three you and the allied countries will get a MAJOR power boost. One more thing is to build mines in resource-rich cities for more resource output. This will be useful with long term political problems such deficit, debt (which is rare as the NAU) etc. (Outdated as of the Biomes/Events update, please rewrite this)

As the United States of America

  1. Immediately justify on Mexico and Canada. Start biome training your 1.5 million troops for winter specialization. Make 3 million for Mexico, and biome train them for arid specialization.
  2. You need to declare war as fast as you can. Since your idealogy is democracy you’ll lose stability for attacking nations and getting high war exhaustion. The reason for declaring fast is so that your enemies don’t have the time to prepare and defend.
  3. Blitz Canada with your troops. If Canada is a player, then good luck. They may be very skilled.
  4. For Mexico, you can split your army into 4 groups. Launch a four-pronged attack on it and create 4 destroyers and submarines in the Gulf of Mexico. If they have Brazil, create submarines and battleships.
  5. If Mexico is fortifying their capital, get some aircraft parts and create an aircraft carrier. Stack it with your other ships.
  6. Mexico’s forces should be heavily weakened by now. Send in a rush of tanks and take their land.

If Canada is a player

  1. Immediately justify on Canada, but act like you aren’t going for them so it’s a surprise attack (Blitzkrieg). Meanwhile, put 2 million troops in cities like Chicago, New York, Boston, and Washington DC on the east, and in the west, put down an extra 1.5 million troops. Train them all for winter specialization. Prepare some tanks as well and get artillery to wipe out their troops first.
  2. Once justifying is done, declare war on Canada and immediately send your troops in the east to capture key cities like Toronto and Ottawa. This should bring down Canada’s stability, economy, and manpower by quite a bit. In the west, if there are no troops, it should be easy to capture.
    1. Make sure to leave a small force behind in Washington DC DC with artillery, in case Canada tries to capital snipe.
  3. Don’t keep invading. Entrench your troops in major cities and wait for Canada’s remaining troops to come. Once you are done taking care of Canada’s troops you can easily invade the rest of Canada. Just be careful, even with winter specialization winter can still kill a large portion of your troops by attrition.
  4. If the player has not left by that point, they might try to build more troops in smaller cities, but with your larger army, it shouldn’t be much of a problem.

If Canada and Mexico decide to work together

Make a navy to attack coastal troops and possibly stop transports from reaching larger cities in America to stop Mexican expansion, then create a wall of artillery in central Arizona and New Mexico to weaken many of their troops (its even better if their troops aren’t specialized). For Canada, make divisions of 10-20k infantry units in Alaska and train them for winter specialization, then attack Fort Nelson, Whitehorse, and Yellowknife to outsmart Canada by invading the arctic before they can use the arctic to their advantage. Then make units of 200k infantry and place them at the New England- Canada border in case a Capital Snipe is tried. Then send in a infantry division of 350k or tank division of 2k to take Ontario, Ottawa, and Montreal. Then you can Auto Capture Canada. If they make a force in the Northwest, you can make artillery units to counter it. If you took his 3 most valuable cities, he will be more focused on the Northeast giving you time to wipe out his army near Washington DC. Even if he does focus near Washington DC he will have almost completely been invaded and now the path of what to do splits off. If Canada started the war you can give him the peace giving you a 2-year grace period to attack and an extra 75 days or more if they forgot to justify beforehand. During the grace period do these things:

  • Make 10 electronic factories and get communism ideology if you can. Also do everything you can to increase factory production aswell as manpower gain.
  • Buy the neseccary amount of oil needed and get 4 aircraft carriers, 4 destroyers, and 6 submarines (if you did everything in step 1 this won’t affect your economy too much.
  • Position 2 of the Aircraft Carriers in this specific order. Point at Mexico City and go west until you hit water. Put 1 Aircraft Carrier and 1 Destroyer there. Repeat but go east.
  • Put the other 2 Aircraft Carriers at San Diego and Brownsville. Submarine positions on step 5.
  • Put 3 Submarines on big Gulf of Mexico cities like Houston, New Orleans, and Tampa
  • Put the last 3 on Big cities of the East coast that will need protection from Mexican forces.

Now its time for the battle. Start training all of your units if you have the money and start the justification. Make a few more destroyers if you want to make sure your submarines survive. Assign them to your best Generals. Also put a few Anti Air guns down. You can also try and mess with their trade by asking your allies to cancel specific trades with them. Once justification is done, start the war. Instantly your aircraft Carriers will cripple Mexican units and force them to attack from the Yucatan where you can move a Submarine down and destroy all transports. By now they may have made destroyers to counter the submarines. Use Aircraft Carriers to destroy all naval units and now this is when you attack. Make 5-20 divisions of 1-2k tanks and while you take out the rest of Mexican forces train them for Arid Specialization. Now make a few more Submarines with the aircraft carriers to escort your tanks to coastal cities and take them. This way you can stop construction of naval ships and give them less options to make a naval ship at. Now you can slowly move in and as soon as you make a few beachheads in Mexico start supplying the fronts with infantry / more tanks, artillery to counter remaining units as well as anti aircraft if they start to make air units. Now you have multiple winning fronts that Mexico won’t be able to stop and slowly close in on Mexico City. Once you take the capital Mexico will have probably left or like many bad players allied China and called him in. If you are a good player, you would have done the truce lock strategy even if they weren’t already Mexican allies. By knowing this, you can stop major superpowers getting involved and if they do, a lot of them will assume just sending troops will work so make even more submarines to counter them. Now Mexico should have been fully taken out because most people just Auto Capture after the player leaves or they take the capital of that country so now annex Mexico and boom! You have finally managed to hold off an attack from Mexico and Canada and managed to form North American Union.

As Canada

If USA is a player and is skilled

They would know all your counters. All you can do is camp in the arctic and see if it works. You may have lost most of your stuff, but you have at least prevented them from forming.

If USA is a player and is mediocre

  1. Make 3 electronics factories in your 3 key cities, and a steel manufactory in a nearby city. Set your naval doctrine to “Capital Fleet”, and import 3 copper and 0.2 titanium from any country. Begin justifying on the United States.
  2. Sell your electronics to a high income ai country like Brazil, India, or China, and make a battleship in Lake Ontario as soon as you get 57m money. Your justification should be complete by this time, and the USA should start justifying back.
  3. By this time, the USA must have justified, if they also plan on forming the NAU. In the case that they don’t, follow the same steps next. Buy a motor factory in Toronto, and an aircraft factory in Ottawa. Be sure to buy the following resources: 2.1 Tungsten, 2.1 Aluminium, 2.1 Chromium, 2 Titanium, from any country.
  4. (For if the USA did justify in step 3) If the USA hasn’t declared war yet, put your 120k home guards in Ottawa, and build infantry until you have 360,000 in Ottawa, accompanied with about 300 artillery. If the USA Has declared war, spam as much tanks as possible. Move your home guards to Ottawa.
  5. By this time, the USA must have declared war, if they planned to invade you. If they didn’t, then they should have at least justified. Build a few attackers and tanks, and research your factory output to sell more electronics. Be sure to switch to the ideology “Socialism” for extra manpower, lower war exhaustion, and more electronics.
  6. The USA should be invading your west, but that’s fine, your east is what matters the most. Put at least 30k divisions in your northern cities and entrench them. If the Usa declares war here, build an aircraft carrier in Oshawa. Put your tanks on Oshawa to protect it from being taken, so the aircraft carrier can be constructed.
  7. When you gather the income and upkeep needed, replace the Battleship with an aircraft carrier in Lake Ontario. The US must have prepared forces over there to steamroll your east, but this aircraft carrier will obliterate them. Capital snipe the US after, with a navy outside the US east coast. If they declared war on step 6, Wait to obliterate their forces with your aircraft carriers. Then capital snipe.
  8. It must be straightforward by now if the US ragequits. But if he doesn’t, then take that aircraft carrier into the ocean. Since the St. Lawrence canal is not present, you’re going to have to build another carrier, this time in the Atlantic.
  9. If you hold the US capital for long enough, the country should start breaking up, and the US player must have ragequitted. Take over the rest of the USA and then take Mexico, and you’re finished.

If USA is a player and is bad or new

Repeat the first 3 steps in the mediocre part. They should be reckless and send their entire army to either your capital or your biggest city. A few attackers or the battleship (if the US goes for Toronto) should weaken them significantly. He will most likely ragequit, so you can take over his country.

If USA is AI

Make up a bunch of tanks with electronics and oil and invade. Use the A.I luring tactic for their guards. It is that simple. Do the same for Mexico but with a 3-pronged attack. Put government spending on if you need to.

As Mexico

  1. Fortify Mexico City. Get a few electronic factories so you can sell them to AI.
  2. After that, get motor, steel and aircraft factories.

Most US players go for Mexico first to form the North American Union. Immediately make electronic factories in your square cities. You should also increase your government and research spending, but government spending should be your priority. You should have bombers ready as well as artillery as most US players prefer to use infantry than tanks. You should research in the support tree and the tank tree as well as the factory output technology in the economic section. As you should be able to get the US from the south if they are using infantry, then the losses should be able to make them leave or break them as Texas or the Confederate States of America might declare independence from all the losses the US suffered. You should be able to take Texas and the Confederate States of America and continue your conquest northward.

If the US does not use infantry but tanks, then you should research tanks yourself and get infantry entrenched on your bordering cities with artillery and bombers. Allying countries such as China and Russia also works as most of these players aren’t friendly to each other. You should also get anti-tank weapons on your infantry.

If you are still getting low stability, it’d be good for you to focus some troops towards forming the Mexican Empire.

Controversy

The N.A.U. is considered by players to be an easy formable for the U.S.A. and it allows the United States to gain massive amounts of power, not to mention, the formable doesn’t include Central America either, so in player’s eye’s it isn’t hard to form N.A.U. without taking a massive dive in stability. The United States of South America and Brazil are also like the North American Union, however, it is more balanced because a Brazil player has to tank massive amounts of stability to take what they need for their formable. This is not the case for the United States, and because it can be formed so early, it is disliked amongst the
community when the United States forms it.

Trivia

  • The old flag had all of Central America, however, the formable didn’t require the region. Due to this, it was then fixed.
