New American Pie Movie Will Reportedly Try to Offer a Fresh Take on the Series – IGN

A new American Pie movie is in the works from writer Sujata Day, and will apparently offer “a fresh take” on the long-running raunchy comedy series.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, this new installment in the American Pie franchise is based on Day’s original pitch. Day is an actor, model, and screenwriter, and is perhaps best known for the role of Sarah in the comedy-drama series, Insecure, as well as the role of CeeCee in the webs series, The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl.

The original American Pie debuted in 1999 starring Jason Biggs as Jim – a dorky high school senior who’s determined to lose his virginity before graduation. The film has since spawned a number of sequels with many of the original cast, including Biggs, Alyson Hannigan, and Sean William Scott.

The original American Pie contains plotlines that would be considered problematic today, with star Jason Biggs telling Buzzfeed the movie’s infamous webcam scene “wouldn’t get made now and it couldn’t get made now. It would be unacceptable what that represents.” A fresh take on the movie would almost certainly have take a different approach to what a sex comedy can be.

Although no director is currently attached to the upcoming American Pie movie, Day herself made a directorial debut in 2020 with Definition Please – a comedy-drama about a former spelling bee champion that picked up awards at the San Francisco CAAM Fest, Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival, and others. It’s possible a new American Pie will be her first major directorial gig.

Most recently, the main series concluded with American Reunion in 2012. IGN’s American Reunion review gave it 6/10 and said: “For the most part, Reunion relies heavily on its original audience to sell itself. And while it is insanely gratifying to see what everybody’s been up to since Wedding — and without spoiling too much, I do mean everybody — newcomers to the franchise will get very little out of it… True, the gross-out gags and sex jokes have definitely gotten old, but the lovable characters remain just as relevant as they were 13 years ago.”
