Introduction

The National Football League (NFL) is the highest level of professional American football competition in the world. It has been around since 1920 and has grown to become one of the most popular professional sports leagues in America, with millions of fans tuning in each week to follow their favorite teams. The NFL consists of 32 teams, split evenly between the National Football Conference and the American Football Conference. The 32 teams are not evenly distributed between the 50 states – some states have up to three NFL teams, while other states do not own any NFL teams. Each team plays 17 regular-season games, followed by a series of playoff matches culminating with the Super Bowl—a highly anticipated annual event that brings together some of the world’s best athletes for an exciting championship game. The NFL also has numerous awards and accolades for its players, such as MVPs, All-Pros, Pro Bowlers, and Hall of Famers.

Although the essence of the sport has not changed much over the years, it has become increasingly sophisticated as time has passed. NFL teams today are worth several billions of dollars on average, and their value is shown in the training, gear, and the massive staff that work to give each team an edge over the others. In addition to having become more sophisticated, it has also become increasingly regulated by rules and penalties, most of which are implemented to prevent serious or fatal injuries.
