Quarterly Retail E-Commerce Sales Report

The Census Bureau of the Department of Commerce announced today that the estimate of U.S. retail e-commerce sales for the first quarter of 2023, adjusted for seasonal variation, but not for price changes, was $272.6 billion, an increase of 3.0 percent (±0.7%) from the fourth quarter of 2022. Total retail sales for the first quarter of 2023 were estimated at $1,799.5 billion, an increase of 0.9 percent (±0.4%) from the fourth quarter of 2022. The first quarter 2023 e-commerce estimate increased 7.8 percent (±1.6%) from the first quarter of 2022 while total retail sales increased 3.4 percent (±0.4%) in the same period. E-commerce sales in the first quarter of 2023 accounted for 15.1 percent of total sales.

On a not adjusted basis, the estimate of U.S. retail e-commerce sales for the first quarter of 2023 totaled $253.1 billion, a decrease of 16.5 percent (±0.7%) from the fourth quarter of 2022. The first quarter 2023 e-commerce estimate increased 8.0 percent (±1.6%) from the first quarter of 2022 while total retail sales increased 3.6 percent (±0.4%) in the same period. E-commerce sales in the first quarter of 2023 accounted for 15.1 percent of total sales.
