Mausoleum of Halicarnassus (Bodrum City) – All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go
I really liked this site! Came upon it quite by accident while exploring the back lanes of Bodrum. It’s located just off Turgut Reis Cd.
The site has a small covered museum in which there’s an informational video and several information boards, all in English. The grounds themselves are beautiful, especially in the early morning sun.
The pre-Mausoleum staircase, pre-Mausoleum tomb chambers and Mausolus’ tomb chamber itself are clearly labelled in English.
However, it requires a bit of imagination to fully envision the enormous Mausoleum that once stood here before a series of earthquakes in the 12th to 15th centuries toppled it and before the remains were whisked away to shore up segments of Bodrum Castle. Still, it’s fascinating to realise that this site was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
