How to share your Amazon Prime subscription

With the cost of everything from food to petrol on the rise, reducing outgoings is a must for everyone at the moment. For many of us, that will include reviewing what we pay for subscription services, such as music or movie streaming or bundled offers like . Prime offers an array of different benefits from free delivery on Amazon orders to movie streaming.

At £79 a year (rising to £95 a year from September), Amazon Prime certainly doesn’t come cheap, but did you know you can share some of the subscription benefits with one other adult in your home at no extra cost? It can certainly help reduce your monthly outgoings, especially if both of you currently subscribe.

You’ll need to create an Amazon Household account, then you can nominate which adult to share your Prime subscription with, although they will need their own Amazon account to do this. It’s also worth noting that Amazon Household requires you to share access to the bank cards on your Amazon account with the other user, although they can still store and use their own cards for payment.

Amazon Household doesn’t only let you share a Prime subscription – it also lets you create a family library so another adult and up to two children in your home can access apps, eBooks and audiobooks you’ve purchased through Amazon as well.

What does Amazon Prime include?

Free delivery on thousands of items sold through Amazon is probably the most well-known benefit of a Prime subscription but there are plenty of others, too. For example, you also get free access to Prime Video – Amazon’s movie and TV streaming service – along with Prime Reading, which gives you access to thousands of books and magazines, which you can read on a Kindle, Fire Tablet or the Kindle App for iOS or Android.

There’s also 30-minute early access to lightning deals that appear on Amazon each day – extremely useful during the Black Friday sales.

All of the benefits listed above are included when you share a Prime subscription through Amazon Household.

However, there are some Prime benefits you can’t share in this way. This includes access to Amazon Music Prime – the brand’s music streaming service, which has a catalogue of two million tracks and creates personalised playlists. You won’t be able to share First Reads, either, which lets Prime subscribers download and read one book a month before it’s available on general release for free.

If you’re sharing someone else’s Prime subscription, you also won’t be able to access the free online storage Amazon gives them for photos and videos online.

How to share an Amazon Prime subscription

  1. Start by creating an Amazon Household. The person that has the Prime subscription should visit the dedicated page, and under the section called ‘Create your Household’ now, select ‘Add Adult’.
  2. If they’re with you, select ‘Sign up together on this device’ and they can enter the email address and password for their Amazon account. Alternatively, you can send an email invitation, which they’ll have 14 days to accept.
  3. Next, you’ll be asked if you agree to share payment methods. This won’t change the default bank cards on each account, but it does mean you’ll be able to see the payment cards each of you stores.
  4. Once this has been accepted, press ‘Create Household’. Next, you’ll be prompted to confirm the items you plan to share through Family Library – such as apps, eBooks and audiobooks. You can always go back and choose to share different content at a later date.
  5. Once completed, the adult you’ve shared Prime with will be sent an email informing them they’ve been added to a household and now can access Prime and some of its benefits.

You can leave an Amazon Household at any time by visiting the page and selecting ‘Leave’, which appears below your name and avatar on the left-hand side on the page. However, you won’t be able to join another Amazon Household for 180 days.
