How to Rock Your First Day on the Job
Nội Dung Chính
The first day of your new job can be both exciting and stressful. You’re probably excited to start working (and making money), but also feel a bit nervous about making the right impression. So what to do on your first day of work? Here are our tips to rock your first day at your new job!
Dress the part
Feel confident on your first day by choosing an outfit that is appropriate for your new job. Does your company have a formal dress code or a casual one? If you are not sure, reach out to your HR manager or browse the company’s website or social media pages for inspiration. Also, it’s never a bad idea to dress more formal and then adjust after you see what your coworkers are wearing. Check out our video on office attire to get more information AND inspiration!
Arrive early
Map out your route to work in advance so you know exactly where to go and how long it will take to get there. Be sure to arrive a few minutes early to give yourself time to freshen up. If you have a remote job and your first day of work is at home instead of the office, wake up early to set up your workspace, and test your technology in advance to make sure there are no issues.
Bring your work documents
Some employers use the first day of work to onboard you to the team. That may include going over the employee handbook, introducing you to your team, and completing new hire paperwork. Be work-ready by making sure you have the right documents with you, otherwise, you might get sent home until you’re able to provide the right documents, like: your government ID (driver’s license, passport), social security card, and bank account information if your company requires you to use direct deposit.
Be ready to interact
You might be introduced to a lot of people on your first day who are eager to learn more about you. Remember to smile, give a strong handshake, and have your elevator pitch ready.
Ask questions
There’s always a steep learning curve when starting a new job. A lot of information is being thrown at you and it feels overwhelming. Now is the perfect time to ask lots of questions, especially since managers expect you to have questions. There’s no such thing as a silly question, so ask away! The goal is to better understand how the company operates and how to better do your job. Check out this video on how to effectively communicate at work.
Take notes
When you are new on the job, you will receive a lot of information. Do yourself a favor and take notes so you have something to refer to later on.
Mute your cell phone
Before you enter the building (or log in to start your shift), watch this video about taking phone calls during work.
Take breaks
Starting a new job can be overwhelming, give yourself a moment to be alone, take a few deep breaths and refresh.
Be yourself
Don’t try to show up as anyone other than yourself. You were hired because the hiring manager believes in your ability to do the job. New job jitters are normal, mistakes will happen, and that’s okay. Just remember to be kind to yourself as you adjust to your new job.
