Flora Cash Discuss Anxiety On Track “Don’t You Look At Me That Way”

Anxiety, whilst still strangely taboo in nature, is one of the most common illnesses plaguing our society. And, in a bid to lift the veil on the topic and its connections to spirituality is duo Flora Cash with their mental health-focused tune “Don’t You Look At Me That Way”. Rudimentary in nature, the track’s base is made up of a rippling acoustic guitar that is gently built upon with a soft piano rendition and echoing production, offering a sorrowful yet soothing sound. Haunting vocals carry introspective lyrics as the duo asks, “I’ve been terrified and I wonder why. Am I going crazy?” leading listeners to feel both understood yet empathetic to the psycho-spiritual tournament being discussed, all the while having their own anxieties washed away by the pair’s melancholic tone.

“It’s the kind of thing we’ve both experienced at different times and to different degrees in our lives. We both have a history of pretty severe bouts of anxiety and stuff like that and we think the root of anxiety in many cases is actually this sort of deep existential panic,” explains the duo when speaking on the mental health messaging at the heart of their track. “And ultimately the only way forward for most people is to reconnect with some deep sense of spiritual meaning, surrender, acceptance – whatever that happens to mean to each person. But we believe that fundamentally it’s usually a “spiritual” crisis. And it’s important to shed light on that.”

Having made their beginnings on SoundCloud, the pair set their sight’s on dominating of the modern-day pop scene, culminating in them gaining a platinum certification and millions of streams globally. And, with their third album on the horizon and “Don’t You Look At Me That Way” set to climb up the charts, you should be keeping an eye on the pair, as they continue to make it known that they are a musical force to be reckoned with.

Hey guys! We are halfway through 2021, how has this year been for you?
It’s been nice. We’ve released a lot of new music; a new song roughly every 5 weeks. We had a lot of material build-up over the past year or so and it’s been great to get it off our chest. Also, we had a baby! Rocker Peggy Lleshaj Randall. So we’ve been raising her.

Do you think it’s affected your creativity?
This year has actually been kind of a boon creatively as well but for different reasons. Having a new little human in your life can be really inspiring. Plus, she happens to be the best.

How did you guys first meet? What sparked the musical interest?
We met on SoundCloud. We were on the same page musically and that’s how we initially connected. The plan was simply to collaborate on something but we ended up falling in love.

You guys have said you will never reveal the meaning of your band name, why is this?
Because it’s a secret! C’mon!

You’ve just dropped your new single “Don’t Look At Me That Way”, talk us through the production process!
It was an idea we started around September of last year. It was originally just the guitar riff and we started writing a song over it but ended up completely scratching that original idea. Then Shpresa started pouring out these incredible melodies and it kind of went from there. For several months the song was just a really rough demo and then we did 2 intense days of refining the lyrics before 1 intense day of recording and it was done the day before we needed to deliver it for release.

It’s all about someone experiencing a psycho-spiritual crisis, why did you decide to focus on this for your single?
It’s the kind of thing we’ve both experienced at different times and to different degrees in our lives. We both have a history of pretty severe bouts of anxiety and stuff like that and we think the root of anxiety in many cases is actually this sort of deep existential panic. And ultimately the only way forward for most people is to reconnect with some deep sense of spiritual meaning, surrender, acceptance – whatever that happens to mean to each person. But we believe that fundamentally it’s usually a “spiritual” crisis. And it’s important to shed light on that.

What do you want people to take away from your music?
We want people to feel that we put real care and craftsmanship into the music; to understand that we really don’t just make songs in some kind of cookie-cutter fashion. We try to imbue each track with its own identity. We (usually) never recycle so much as a snare. We want every element, from the theme, the lyrics, the riffs, the beats, the whatever, to feel 100% native to the song of which it’s a part.

You’ve performed on the James Corden Show and Live with Kelly and Ryan, what has been your biggest pinch-me moment so far?
For us, the biggest “pinch-me” moment was probably going Platinum in America.

Who would you cite as your inspirations?
Too many to list. But we have a playlist we’ve been working on for years that we update constantly on Spotify called “Flora Cash’s Favorite Songs” and that gives you as good an idea as any as to what inspires us (past and present.)

What’s next for you? What are you most excited for?
We’re releasing our 3rd full-length album this autumn! It’s been a long time in the making and we’re really really excited to share this collection of songs with our fans.
