Five Nights at Freddy’s 6 has been cancelled

Sad news, fans of watching YouTubers screaming their way through gaming jump scares – Five Nights at Freddy’s creator Scott Cawthon has revealed he has cancelled work on the sixth instalment in the series.

Posting a length message on the fifth game’s Steam community page, Cawthon wrote: “After forcing myself to keep working on it day after day, I realized something- I just don’t want to work on this.

“With each game’s release, I think the expectations get higher and higher for the next, and rightfully so. Each game SHOULD be better than the last!

“But that pressure starts to mount, and I fear that I’ve been neglecting other things in my life for the sake of trying to keep up with those mounting expectations.”

He updated the post to say that he’s calling the game cancelled so as not to lead anyone on, and although he might return to make a sixth Freddy’s game, he doesn’t think it likely he will pick up where he left off.

Cawthon also said that he has asked everyone involved in the development of the game not to reveal anything about it publicly.

The developer went on to assure his fans that the movie is still in the works, and he is not quitting game development entirely – he is working on a VR game and wants to make a pizzeria tycoon simulator.

Since its release, the Five Nights at Freddy’s franchise had become a cultural phenomenon through viral YouTube Let’s Plays, and has amassed a fanbase so passionate about the game that they called up a pizza place called Freddie’s, believing it to be somehow involved with the games.
