As of end March 2023, there are some 185,760 refugees and asylum-seekers registered with UNHCR in Malaysia.  

  • Some 160,320 are from Myanmar, comprising some 107,430 Rohingyas, 23,660 Chins, and 29,230 other ethnic groups from conflict-affected areas or fleeing persecution in Myanmar.  
  • The remaining individuals are some 25,430 refugees and asylum-seekers from 50 countries fleeing war and persecution, including some 7,100 Pakistanis, 3,440 Afghans, 3,460 Yemenis, 3,160 Somalis, 2,810 Syrians, 1,510 Sri Lankans, 750 Iraqis, 640 Palestinians, and others.  

Some 66% of refugees and asylum-seekers are men, while 34% are women.

There are some 49,380 children below the age of 18.

 

UNHCR statistics does not map or reflect new arrivals into the country. 
    
Any increase in numbers of registered refugees are as a result of UNHCR’s own capacity to conduct registration.
    
According to data obtained from refugees, in general, there have been no significant refugee arrivals since 2013, and total numbers of overall new arrivals have declined significantly from then until now.
