Part of what makes the Xpander spacious is its size – it’s bigger than its closest rivals, the Honda BR-V and the Aruz. Having the longest wheelbase also helps in creating more head and legroom inside.

Ground clearance is a generous 205 mm, which should make braving flash floods not much of a problem.

How many variants are available?

It’s an uncomplicated affair – only one variant is offered. One variant with everything you need in a people mover, especially a comfortable ride and Android Auto/Apple CarPlay to entertain your guests filling in the car’s seven seats.

What’s cool about the exterior?

Since we get the facelifted variant, our Xpander features a revised ‘Dynamic Shield’ front fascia that features Bi-LED headlamps, slighty modified front grille…

…and neat touches such as a shark fin antenna, 16-inch wheels and L-shaped LED combination tail lights.

What about the interior?

Going inside, there’s a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There’s also 6-speakers for your to entertain passengers with.

It’s fairly roomy for rear seat occupants.

It also has four roof-mounted rear air-conditioning vents and lots of practical cubby spaces – as you’d expect from a seven-seat SUV.

How big is the boot?

The Xpander’s second- and third-row seats can fold flat to give a maximum boot space of 1,630 litres. With the third-row seats down, the boot space is 495 litres.

What powertrain does the Xpander have?

It’s got the 4A91, a 1.5-litre, naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engine making 105 PS and 141 Nm, paired to a four-speed automatic. This engine is closely related to the one in the Mitsubishi Colt, but updated to fit current market requirements.

Is it powerful enough?

This is how the Xpander’s powertrain compares to its closest rivals. It sits in the midlde of the pack in terms of power-to-weight ratio (Honda BR-V – 94.6 PS-per-tonne, Xpander – 84 PS-per-tonne – 77.9 PS-per-tonne).  

What about fuel economy?

The Xpander returns a claimed figure of 7 litres/100km. Meanwhile, the Aruz and BR-V share the same claimed figure of 6.5 litres/100km. 

Is it front- or rear-wheel drive?

The Xpander is front-wheel drive, which’ll help reduce maintenance costs as you don’t have to replace the rear differential oil unlike rear-wheel drive offerings – which are the Aruz and Toyota Rush.

You’ll get a 5-year/unlimited mileage warranty with your Xpander. There’s also 56 showrooms (46 are 3S centres) nationwide, of which there’s 14 in Sabah and Sarawak.
