Helpful recipe tips

  • For best results use old-fashioned rolled oats for a nutty flavor (without the nuts) more texture, and larger crumbles.
  • I like to use Granny Smith apples because of their tart flavor and firm texture but there are lots of great baking apples to choose from. See below for more apple choices.
  • Cube the apples into about 3/4 inch cubes, give or take a little bit.
  • Serve this dish warm, room temperature, or cold. It really is a matter of personal preference.
  • For more protein add 3/4 cup chopped pecans or walnuts to the topping.
  • Once the dish has completely cooled store the crumble covered on the counter at room temperature for up to 2 days. You do not have to refrigerate your apple crumble if you are going to consume it within 2 days. After 2 days move it to an airtight container and store it in the fridge for up to 2 more days for a total of 4 days of consumption time.

My go-to apples for this recipe are crisp apples like Honeycrisp or Granny Smith apples. My go-to apples for this recipe are crisp apples like Honeycrisp or Granny Smith apples.

Best apples for apple crumble

My go-to apples for this recipe are crisp apples like Honeycrisp or Granny Smith apples. Other good choices are Braeburn or Pink Lady (also known as Cripps Pink). You can also do a mixture of all of these or any of these for more texture and flavor. Peel and cut your apples into chunks that are 3/4 inch thick to help keep a little bit of firmness through the baking process. For best results stir them with a little lemon juice to keep them from browning while you are making your way through the recipe.
