Does PayPal Accept American Express Cards?

Yes, PayPal does accept American Express credit cards and debit cards, along with credit cards on the rest of the four major card networks (Mastercard, Visa, etc). People who use an American Express credit card or debit card to make a purchase through PayPal don’t pay any fees.

Merchants who accept card payments through PayPal will pay a fee of 2.9% plus $0.49 (for U.S. dollars) per transaction, however. The merchant fee for accepting an American Express card through PayPal is the same as the fee for accepting cards from any other network. But unlike other networks, international commercial transactions made through American Express Payments, does not incur any additional fees.

If you choose to send money to friends and family through PayPal with an American Express card (or any other credit card), you will also owe a fee. The fee is 2.9% plus $0.30 per transaction (for U.S. dollars). However, if you use an Amex Send Account, the fee is waived. If it’s not necessary for you to pay by card, you can fund the transaction with your PayPal Cash balance or a bank account linked to PayPal and avoid the fee.

Fees will also vary depending on the type of transaction (e.g.: consumer, commercial, domestic, international, donations, etc.). For a full breakdown of fees, you can check out PayPal’s dedicated web pages for both merchant and consumer fees.
