Describe an idea you had for improving something at work or college

When and where did you have the idea?

Some years ago, I used to work at a successful company, which was quite small, where we provided multi-level training courses on a particular subject. We used to employ people who had been trained previously in different places throughout the world and with different backgrounds and professional experience.

What was your idea?

Our clients were locally based, so there were sometimes cross-cultural problems that impacted how effective the results of the training were.

Although most of the new employees hired had the same basic technical or theoretical knowledge, it seemed that there was always the problem that they found it difficult to adjust this to certain cultural aspects of their new position as most of them had never worked in that part of the world before.

I thought it would be a smart idea to create a training course to show how some of the previous training could be adapted to the current work environment. The aim was to show how the employees could apply it more successfully with local clients.

One day, after a conversation with a client about an interesting situation that happened during a training session in the company where he worked, I started thinking that there must be a way to improve the situation and help prevent this type of thing from happening again.

Who did you tell about your idea?

I came up with the idea of an add-on component to the minimal induction training which existed in the company at that time. And I suggested the idea to my boss.

He was interested but didn’t have time to implement it, so he decided to give me the responsibility for it, and he said that he would help out when he could.

Together, we worked on compiling some core training modules to show employees how some of the local work customs and habits affected what they were trying to do. The training showed how by just making some simple changes in their method of presentation and application techniques, they could become much more successful in terms of results with their clients.

It took us about three months to put the new training package together and check it before trying it with a new group of employees.

We got some feedback from clients we were working with at the time, and they thought that the new method of delivery was much better than they had experienced from new employees previously.

We implemented this new training course as a standard part of new employee induction training. And the new employees also seem to appreciate it because it makes them more effective and makes them aware of certain things that they wouldn’t normally have considered. These were things that they would have learned by simply observing or talking with employees who had spent longer working in that particular environment.

As an add-on, we interviewed employees leaving the company after their contracts ended. It was a sort of brain-picking session about their experiences so that we could add any lessons learned through their experience to the training course and make it even more effective and useful for new employees arriving.

Why did you think your idea would make an improvement?

I thought my idea would improve the overall outcome of our induction training program. Why? Because it identified a gap and provided a clear solution to overcome it. My boss agreed, which made me feel confident it would work.
