Christina Aguilera Performs Goth Rendition of “Genie In A Bottle” at People’s Choice Awards – The Pit
More and more these days, pop artists are experimenting with rock and metal in their music. Whether it’s Ed Sheeran collaborating with Cradle of Filth or Doja Cat turning her hit single “Say So” into a live rock show, mainstream musicians are proving that there’s something about heavy guitars and pounding drums that just can’t be denied. Now, ’90s pop sensation Christina Aguilera is getting in on it, performing a sweeping goth version of her massive radio hit “Genie In A Bottle” at the People’s Choice Awards.
As you’ll see in the footage below, Christina never goes full Evanescence with her version of “Genie In The Bottle.” That said, her flowing black gown and crew of funereal violin players definitely ups the dark, morbid vibe of the song. Most important, though, are the guitar riffs and string sections that one can hear moving through this rendition of Aguilera’s bubblegum favorite. If you went back in time and told a metalhead in 1999 that Christina Aguilera was going to dress like a Disney villain and add guitar riffs to that song that’s all over the radio, they might have laughed, but here we are.
Listen to Christina Aguilera’s new version of “Genie In A Bottle” below:
While this goth rendition is cool, it’s the Sheeran/Filth collaboration we’re most excited for. And according to frontman Dani Filth, it might actually happen!
“I’ve actually been emailing with him,” said Dani in a recent interview, quickly adding, “No no, it’s true! He actually touched base with me. I’ve been invited up to his place. Well, he said he could come down to mine, but I pointed out to him that I don’t own my own bar or village, and it’d be better if I went there. He said he’d do anything. Quite literally. He said he’s a massive fan. He seems like a genuinely very nice guy actually.”
