In 1923, BMW introduced the air-cooled R32 opposed twin that would become the company’s trademark design for nearly a century. Many iterations later, the boxer engine has evolved into a bigger, liquid-cooled version that powers the latest R 1250 GS adventure bike, R 1250 RT sport tourer, and other popular models. BMW prides itself on finding unique solutions to engineering problems, and the German company’s current lineup has everything from entry-level singles like the G 310 GS and the C 650 GT and C Evolution scooters, or “urban mobility” in BMW speak.
The carbon-fiber-framed HP4 Race and the high-revving S 1000 RR, which excels in national and international roadracing competition, prove the company can also deliver extreme performance on par with that of any other manufacturer in the world. But perhaps the most audacious BMW motorcycle extant is the luxurious six-cylinder K 1600 GTL—and its derivative, the K 1600 GT, K 1600 B, and K 1600 Grand America—a technological tour de force for the most discriminating touring riders.
