American Pie: Where the Cast is Today

American Pie is undoubtedly a cult classic. The film franchise follows a group of high schoolers trying to navigate the complications of sex and love. With parents that are attempting to navigate their teens’ sexualities, the film introduced audiences to an unfamiliar fatherly role: the well-meaning but completely awkward dad. In addition to this new parental role, each teenage trope defied pigeonholing in previous high school cult classics. The film went far beyond the jock, the pretty girl, the weirdo, the nerd, and the rebel. With these massive changes to the landscape, writers and directors could now approach teen drama in America in a new way.

This year, the film will celebrate its 23rd anniversary. Altogether there are eight films under the American Pie umbrella, though the main cast appears in at least three if not four of the installments. Many film franchises catapult the cast into stardom quickly, as is the case with the American Pie cast. While the cast went on to participate in more comedic or dramatic gold on TV, breaking out of those first big roles was easier for some than others. Where they are now is a testament to their ability to deliver comedy gold in the first film. According to an interview on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Jason Biggs revealed that the idea for American Pie 5 gets bigger each year, meaning audiences could see another reunion of the cast.

The most pivotal character in the film, Kevin, played by Thomas Ian Nicholas, suggests that he, Oz, Jim, and Finch enter into a pact to have sex before they graduate high school. He is gifted the “Sex Bible”, detailing different sex positions, which he uses on his girlfriend, Vicky. Despite this pivotal role in the film, Nicholas has largely been in independent movies, one of which he produced called Adverse. Nicholas played prolific roles like Walt Disney in Walt Before Mickey and Martin Scorsese in Zeroville. Outside of movies, Nicholas was also a series regular on Red Band Society and the animated series Gormiti. He has been on hiatus since the release of Adverse in 2021.

Tara Reid

Tara Reid plays Vicky, a teen in a committed relationship with Kevin, who will only have sex with him when things are perfect. Before landing a role in American Pie, Reid had made a name for herself as a dramatic actress in Days of Our Lives and the cult classic The Big Lebowski. Yet her role as Vicky catapulted her to stardom. Like many of her American Pie cast mates, she became a series regular on the medical dramedy, Scrubs, playing one of J.D.’s love interests, Danni. She also starred in several movies like Josie and the Pussy Cats, with Rosario Dawson and Rachel Leigh Cook, and the science fiction franchise, Sharknado. Her latest project Bloodthirst has released its official trailer on YouTube.

Natasha Lyonne

The formidable force of comedy that is Natasha Lyonne plays Jessica in the franchise. Possibly one of the most prolific comediennes, Lyonne has the most diverse repertoire of her American Pie counterparts. She has lent her utterly recognizable voice to various projects like The Simpsons, Steven Universe, and the Netflix hit animated comedy Big Mouth. In addition to her comedy line-up, she took on more dramatic roles in two Netflix hit series: Orange is the New Black, with Jason Biggs, and as the lead in Russian Doll. Currently, she is the voice of Merton in DC’s League of Super-Pets and is playing a hypnotherapist in a short called I’m Losing You.

Chris Klein

Every high school film has the stereotypical jock who also happens to be the school’s heartthrob. American Pie was ahead of its time by casting a handsome Chris Klein as Christopher “Oz” Ostreicher, the star lacrosse player who exaggerates his sexual experiences. Eventually, he falls for Heather, a girl from the jazz choir. Since his success in American Pie, Klein has played a variety of roles from a military man to lending his voice to an episode of American Dad. While he was in several films, he starred in a variety of TV shows throughout the years. He was a series regular on Wilfred, Tron: Uprising, and The Flash. He is currently starring in Sweet Magnolias, which can be streamed on Netflix.

Mena Suvari

Jazz choir enthusiast Heather, played by Mena Suvari, is unknowingly part of Oz’s scheme to fulfill the pact he made with his friends. Suvari’s ability to play an innocent young woman was twisted in the amateur detective show Psych, where she played psychopath Allison Cowley, a role she reprised in the film, Psych: The Movie. Suvari was a series regular on Chicago Fire, the children’s cartoon Clarence, and horror-thriller TV series, American Horror Story. Of her cast mates in American Pie, she has the most gory repertoire. Of her many upcoming projects, Reagan and Breakwater are set to release this year.

Eddie Kaye Thomas

Finch, as portrayed by Eddie Kay Thomas, is possibly the most devious of the pact; he spreads rumors to make himself seem cool among his female peers. His main rival is Stifler, whose mom he plans to seduce and sleep with. After American Pie, Thomas’ star skyrocketed. He went on to star in another franchise, Harold and Kumar, where he played Rosenburg, a small but comedic role. Thomas also became a series regular on ‘Til Death, How to Make it in America, and American Dad!. His current project, Junction, is set to release in 2023. He is also one of the actors currently rumored to be tied to American Pie 5.

Sean William Scott

The prolific himbo, Stifler, was portrayed by Seann William Scott. A character with the only self-proposed nickname, the Stiffmeister, Stifler is often the victim of pranks involving bodily fluids. He also uses meta humor by calling people by their association rather than by their name, essentially reinforcing the tropes American Pie transformed. Outside of American Pie, Scott played similar roles to Stifler in Dude, Where’s My Car? and Dukes of Hazzard. Yet after American Reunion, Scott diversified his repertoire by lending his voice to play Crash in Dreamwork’s film franchise, Ice Age as well as TriStar Animations’ Planet 51. He appeared in one episode of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and was a series regular on Lethal Weapon. Scott is currently playing Joseph ‘Father Joe’ Binghoffer, a compassionate and mature character, in Fox’s sitcom Welcome to Flatch.

Jennifer Coolidge

american-pie-jennifer-coolidge Universal Pictures

Iconic comedienne Jennifer Coolidge plays Jeanine, or Stifler’s mom, the resident hot mom whom all the boys drool over. Coolidge, like Eugene Levy, has a long history of comedy, often being a series regular or making a cameo on hit shows like Sex and the City. Coolidge is one of the few cast members to star in another epic comedy film franchise, Legally Blonde, playing Paulette, a nail technician who starts out shy, but becomes a powerhouse and cheerleader to Reese Witherspoon’s Elle Woods. One trademark of Coolidge’s characters is loving food, which truly paid off in an epic comedy show 2 Broke Girls where she played Sophie, a Polish businesswoman obsessed with Max’s cupcakes. After 2 Broke Girls ended in 2017, Coolidge has been busy making TV shows and movies, with three projects in post-production and two projects in pre-production. One project in particular is Legally Blonde 3, which Coollidge discussed on The Today Show in February 2022.

Jason Biggs

Best known for his role as Jim, the awkward teenage boy who just wants one thing: to have sex. Since the franchise, Jason Biggs has been in various TV series playing in dramas, breaking away from the ‘awkward teen’ trope. He won a SAG award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series in 2015 for his portrayal of Larry Bloom in Netflix’s hit series Orange Is The New Black. While he often plays a boyfriend or husband, he played a more dramatic and devious role on CBS’s The Good Wife. When CBS launched the spin-off series The Good Fight, Biggs reprised his role as Dylan Stack. Currently, Biggs is playing Detective Andy Parlato-Goldstein on Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. He is also filming Best. Christmas. Ever. with Heather Graham, Brandy Norwood, and Matt Cedeño, according to Deadline.

Eugene Levy

american-pie-cast Universal Pictures

Legendary comic Eugene Levy played Noah, or Jim’s Dad, who is well-meaning but often makes situations more embarrassing for his son. One of the few cast members with a strong comedy background, Levy was part of the Canadian comedy sketch series in the late 1970s called SCTV. There, Levy starred alongside other legendary comics like Martin Short and Catherine O’Hara. After the success of American Pie, Levy returned to Canadian TV for another hit comedy show. Schitt’s Creek ran for 6 seasons, following a rich family who loses everything except a small town. Levy and his son, Dan Levy, play father and son alongside Catherine O’Hara and Annie Murphy. Since winning an Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series as part of the production crew, Levy has been in Star-Crossed: The Film and a short called Back Home Again.

Alyson Hannigan

american-pie-alyson-hannigan Universal Pictures

While Alyson Hannigan was known for being in the hit TV show, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, her role as Michelle in American Pie made her a comedy legend with one line, “One time at band camp.” Hannigan’s character in the film is a band nerd, but instead of being sexually frustrated, she is sexually liberated. Much like her co-star Jennifer Coolidge, Hannigan has been in a variety of hit TV series and movies. Most notably, she was in the hit TV series How I Met Your Mother, playing Lily, a kindergarten teacher who speaks her mind and is best friends with Barney Stinson, played by legen-wait-for-it-dary, Niel Patrick Harris. Whether she is lending her voice on Robot Chicken or Fancy Nancy, Hannigan’s versatility as an actress has been showcased in comedy, sci-fi, and drama. Her most recent project is Dodie and Cheryl Get Hitched, which is currently in pre-production.

Shannon Elizabeth

american-pie-shannon-elizabeth Universal Pictures

Shannon Elizabeth’s role as foreign exchange student, Nadia, defied several odds of the trope. While she was beautiful and sexually liberated, she wasn’t interested in someone who couldn’t handle her needs as a woman. Elizabeth has since starred in several hit films like Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Scary Movie, and Love Actually. While her roles in Scary Movie and Love Actually play on her looks, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back show her character, Justice, using Jay and Silent Bob’s crushes on her to her advantage to con them. In addition to her film successes, Elizabeth was a series regular on the popular TV sitcom, That 70’s Show. Unlike many of her co-stars, she has been in more films and music videos than TV series. She is currently filming two movies, Alone Today and A Home for the Holidays, the latter set to release in 2023.
