American Pie Couldn’t Be Made Today, Says Seann William Scott

American Pie actor Seann William Scott says that there’s no way that the movie would get made today. Released in 1999, the first American Pie movie proved to be a hit with audiences, earning over $235 million at the box office and spawning three successful sequels – and a handful of poorly-received, direct-to-video spin-offs. The raunchy comedy tells the story of four teenage boys who make a pact to all lose their virginity by prom night. The last entry in the series, 2012’s American Reunion, also performed well at the box office, once again earning $235 million.

In the American Pie franchise, Scott plays Steve Stifler, also known as the Stifmeister, who serves as an antagonist in the first film but becomes something of a wild card in the sequels. In addition to Scott, American Pie stars Jason Biggs, Chris Klein, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Jennifer Coolidge, Shannon Elizabeth, Alyson Hannigan, and Eugene Levy. Outside of the American Pie franchise, Scott is also known for his roles in The Dukes of Hazzard, Cop Out, Movie 43, Role Models, and as the voice of Crash in a number of the Ice Age films.

In a new interview with Jake’s Takes on YouTube, Scott reflects on American Pie, saying that he doubts the movie would ever get made today. He explains that he doesn’t see there ever being an “appetite for those sort of movies again” and jokes that, if some of the stuff in American Pie was attempted today, it would result in people getting arrested. Check out Scott’s full comment below:

You know, I was having a conversation with a friend the other day, I was like, ‘You could never make American Pie these days.’ Some of the stuff in that movie, you would get arrested and probably go to jail for a long time if you did it. I think a lot of the broader comedies, a lot of the stuff that gave me a career, I don’t see there ever being an appetite for those sort of movies again. I mean, I could be wrong. I think some of the broad comedies can be fun but people are, it feels like, myself included, appreciating more of a witty, smart humor and good writing as opposed to just something kind of over-the-top.

The American Pie movies are intended for mature audiences and feature a good deal of sexuality, nudity, and coarse language, with shock value often being used to get laughs. One of the movie’s most memorable scenes, after all, depicts Biggs’ character performing a sexual act on an apple pie. Of course, like many movies released in the 1990s, not everything has aged well. One extended scene, in particular, that likely wouldn’t be found in a mainstream movie today, involves multiple groups of male characters spying on a woman as she gets undressed and masturbates.

Comedy movies in general have changed drastically since American Pie came out, and for the most part, adult-oriented comedies are no longer big theatrical releases at all anymore. Many of the movies that made Scott’s career, including American Pie, would likely be smaller streaming releases if they were made today. It remains to be seen whether raunchy comedy movies like American Pie will make a comeback, but Scott seems spot on in his analysis that, in general, many viewers today seem to prefer smarter, wittier comedies. But, with the American Pie movies still proving popular with audiences all these years later, and with star Tara Reid having previously assured fans that American Pie 5 will happen, maybe audiences haven’t seen the last of the Stifmeister.
