American Horror Story season 12 potential release date and more

American Horror Story spoilers follow.

Twelve seasons in, American Horror Story has become an institution. A sick, depraved, extremely f**ked-up institute, but an important one nonetheless. In fact, it’s tough to imagine the TV landscape without it, or any of the other Ryan Murphy-fuelled nightmares that followed it for that matter.

Thankfully, we don’t have to imagine that though, because all the way back in January 2020, FX renewed American Horror Story for three more seasons, which will take us to 13 chapters in total.

When the announcement was first made, FX chairman John Landgraf proudly declared: “Ryan and Brad [Fulchuk] are the undisputed masters of horror TV, having created the anthological limited series with American Horror Story and sustaining its success for nearly a decade as FX’s highest-rated series.”

But does this mean the show might end with season 13? Perhaps, but let’s not worry about that too much right now, because we still have plenty of sleepless nights to look forward to when season 12 arrives on our screens.

Grab your pointy witch’s hat and scream “Balenciagaaaa” as we dive deep into Ryan Murphy’s twisted mind and reveal everything you need to know about American Horror Story season 12.

American Horror Story is surprisingly reliable when it comes to scheduling. Aside from season ten, which was delayed a year due to real-life horrors of a COVID nature, every other season has aired in September or October with only one year in between launches.

Knowing that, we’d expect to see American Horror Story season 12 arrive in October, or possibly even September, 2023.

As everyone knows by now, American Horror Story actors rarely appear in just one season. Ryan Murphy’s flagship show often rotates the same cast between seasons, and even among other shows of his as well.

However, mainstays like Jessica Lange and Evan Peters don’t appear as regularly as they used to, and even the usually reliable Sarah Paulson has skipped out on a couple of seasons now too.

In August 2022, the one true Supreme told Variety that she might not return to American Horror Story anytime soon:

“It’s not that I’m not open to it,” said Paulson. “I’m always open to it, but I feel like I’ve been doing it for a long time, and people might start getting sick of me in that world.

“Let someone else scream and run and cry for a second,” she added. “Other people can do that too! Also, my nervous system. There was a time when I was younger when I was like: ‘I can do this all night. I love it!’ Now I’m like: ‘Momma’s tired!'”

When Digital Spy spoke to OG star Taissa Farmiga at the start of 2022, she did tease a possible return somewhere later down the line:

“It’s such a hard question to answer because American Horror Story is just a part of who I am,” said Taissa. “I played Violet when I was 17 when I was first getting into acting, and I was discovering myself. So whenever anyone mentions Horror Story, it’s like, ‘Ah, it’s a bit of home.’

“It’s like a timing thing,” Farmiga added. “I know there were talks previously, but then I was filming on this, and Covid, and the travelling and all these protocols. So, yeah, I can never say no if it’s the right time and the right opportunity. And it’s like, sure, the idea of a cameo is fun, because we get to go in and meet up, and be like, ‘Hey, it’s me.’

“But then it’s also like, I’m still best friends with some of the hair and makeup people, and the crew. You hear them talking about the show. And I’m like, ‘But I miss it.’ It’s a funny mix of all those feelings, you know?”

Each year, the only thing any halfway decent American Horror Story fan is concerned with is what will the next theme be? And as usual, Ryan Murphy’s team are keeping any information on that extremely close to their chests — assuming they’ve even decided what season 12’s direction might be.

With that in mind, all we can do for now is look back at past rumours and unused ideas in the hope of gleaming some information on what’s to come.

While there has previously been talk of cryptids taking centre stage, or perhaps even another reunion season like the crossover we saw in Apocalypse, it’s possible that sirens could soon come into play.

Back in April 2021, Murphy opened things up with a now-deleted poll to ask fans what theme they might want to see next. Options included Aliens, Christmas Horror, Bloody Mary, Piggy Man, Sirens and Plague.

Aliens played an unforgettable role in season ten, so they’re out, plus Bloody Mary starred in a whole episode dedicated to her in American Horror Stories season two, so she won’t be back either. You could argue the plague, or something like it, also factored into NYC AKA season 11.

Based off what’s left, Sirens could be the way to go then. Or maybe that murderous Santa from season two could pop back down the chimney for another round of Christmas Horror.

American Horror Story: NYC didn’t reveal any footage until the very last minute, which means that we probably won’t see much of season 12 until September or October 2023.

American Horror Story airs on FX in the US and is available to watch on in the UK.
