With only three more episodes left this season, AHS: Coven did not disappoint when it returned to television in the New Year – and I have a feeling that season three is going to end with a bang! After all, The Magical Delights of Stevie Nicks showed the forming of a new and very dangerous alliance while also divulging the secret of Marie Laveau’s immortality.

Some of the highlights, in my opinion, were Marie recognizing and respecting Fiona as her equal, as well as the portrayal of voodoo. It is also revealed that Marie had made a deal with Papa Legba (think Doctor Facilier from Disney’s The Princess and the Frog, but creepier) by selling her soul. The direction was especially amazing in these scenes, as the camera angles really made Papa Legba appear intimidating.

After learning about Hank and the witch hunting organization Fiona breaks off all ties with Cordelia, which makes Delia question her own worth in the Coven. I enjoyed the scene that Cordelia shared with Myrtle and I’m excited to see how Delia proves to her mother – and to everyone else – that she isn’t worthless. Perhaps through a showdown between her and her witch-hunting father-in-law?

One of the best scenes in this episode was when Fiona cast a spell to take down Delphi Trust, using mice and a maze to stand in for the real thing. I think that a lot of viewers have probably already guessed that Fiona has no soul, and I believe that The Magical Delights of Stevie Nicks – and her scene with Papa Legba in particular – proved that.

Unfortunately the rest of the Coven didn’t add much to the plot in this episode, which was primarily Fiona- and Marie-centric. We did get a glimpse of Misty Day, who is still trying to make sense of her destiny as the next Supreme, and of Madison being jealous of Misty. Originally I was under the impression that Madison couldn’t be the Supreme because of her heart murmur, but then it was revealed that her resurrection took care of that and she had a chance. And here I thought Madison was a zombie with no beating heart!1607092_218567081660434_1759284182_n1607092_218567081660434_1759284182_n

Additionally, in what I see as an out of character event, Nan developed mind control and wasn’t hesitant to use it in order to get revenge on Luke’s mother. Previously I had believed Nan to be the sanest person in the Coven. As for other characters, Zoe didn’t do anything and Kyle didn’t even make an appearance, though Stevie Nicks did appear as herself – and she also happens to be a white witch! Misty’s reaction to seeing her idol was relatable and very entertaining.

For me, this was one of the best episodes of American Horror Story: Coven so far. The ending where Fiona and Marie teamed up to make a deal with Papa Legba was awesome, and I’m really looking forward to the next few episodes and hopefully finding out who the next Supreme is.
