American Horror Stories season 3 potential release date and more

American Horror Story and American Horror Stories spoilers follow.

11 seasons in, American Horror Story fans still can’t get enough of Ryan Murphy’s flagship show. But what if one season a year just isn’t enough? As the old saying goes: Why have just one American Horror Story when you can have American Horror Stories?

FX must have had the same thought when they decided to commission a disturbing spinoff of the same name that brings new scares with a different cast each week.

Some of these scares aren’t entirely new, because Ryan Murphy’s favourite performers often pop up in this show, and very rarely, they even reprise the same roles they played in his original flagship series.

Grab some popcorn and draw the curtains as we here at Digital Spy break down everything you need to know about American Horror Stories season three…

American Horror Stories season 3 potential release date: When is it out?

Season three of American Horror Stories hasn’t been confirmed yet, which leaves a big question mark around a possible release date. Season two took roughly one year to produce, but until a renewal is announced, it’s unclear when production on season three could actually start.

That is, unless American Horror Stories season three is already being produced in secret. If so, then new episodes could arrive as early as summer 2023, although that might be wishful thinking on our part.

Assuming the show is renewed, expect episodes to air weekly on FX in the US and then drop all at once on Disney+ in the UK a short time later.

Until more details are released, we won’t know for certain who’s going to show up in season three. However, there are a few likely suspects from the wider Murphyverse who could be cast again, including:

• Cody Fern (Apocalypse, 1984 and Double Feature)
• Nico Greetham (Double Feature and American Horror Stories season two)
• Denis O’Hare (Murder House, Coven, Freak Show, Hotel, Double Feature, and American Horror Stories season two)
• Gabourey Sidibe (Coven, Freak Show and Apocalypse and American Horror Stories season two)
• Dominique Jackson (Pose and American Horror Stories season two)
• Judith Light (The Politician and American Horror Stories season two)

We can definitely expect a few casting surprises too when, or if, American Horror Stories season three is announced.

The second season of American Horror Stories represented a significant step-up from season one, especially when it came to the scripts, so that bodes well for a third season. But that’s only if FX actually decides to actually go ahead with it.

Season two was commissioned six days before the first season ended, so we’re a bit worried for season three given that the latest run ended on September 8, 2022. Still, that doesn’t mean a third season isn’t happening. A decade on, FX continue to put their faith in the American Horror Story franchise, so anything’s possible still with this particular spinoff.

If American Horror Stories does return, expect it to play around with characters and themes from previous seasons of American Horror Story again. While season one dove deep into Murder House, season two explored the backstory of a key Coven character. So with that in mind, let’s start placing bets on who from Asylum or Freak Show could pop up next.

Our money’s on Twisty, the adorable psychopath clown.
