Advancing UWM – College of Nursing

Dr. Alice Kuramoto Scholarship

This scholarship was created to provide financial assistance to Southeast Asian Hmong doctoral nursing students.

“After much research into many graduate programs around the U.S., I chose UWM because it’s a well-known school with outstanding professors. The school goes above and beyond to help place students in practicum sites which was very important to me as well. Additionally, the school was more affordable than other schools, and I didn’t want to take on a lot more loans by going to a private college. I’m already still trying to pay off my undergraduate loans. My passion is in mental health because I feel that there is a lot of negative stigma towards the population, and there are not enough mental health providers. I want to raise awareness that individuals with mental health issues need just as much help as any other population. My career goal after I graduate is to work as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner in underprivileged areas. I’ve seen the need with my own eyes and hope that I can make a difference.

“The scholarship means so much to me. With everything going on with COVID-19, my husband was out of work for six weeks; however, the bills have continued to pile up. We have a large household, and financially it’s been a challenge. I’ve been calculating how much I will owe once I graduate with my DNP, and the numbers worry me. When I received the email that I was accepted for this scholarship, I immediately screamed with joy because it couldn’t have come at a better time. I’m so grateful for receiving this scholarship. Thank you so much!”
