What To Do in Paris At Night for Free
1. Photograph Paris at Night
Looking to get some incredible shots of Paris or practice your photography skills? There is no better time to do this than at night!
The Eiffel Tower is glimmering, the bridges are all lit up, and the lights of the bustling cafes and restaurants reflect off the jagged cobblestoned streets. You can also usually capture an inspiring photograph of the reflection of the city on the banks of the Seine River.
Photographers and videographers travel from far and wide to capture the magic of Paris at night in a single photo, so you should too!
2. Have a Midnight Picnic
Picnics are a very popular pass time for locals as well as a fun activity for tourists visiting Paris. Head to the local supermarket and pick up a baguette, some sliced meat (or pickled vegetables), some cheese, and a bottle of wine for a romantic night under the stars!
Okay, so this might not be totally free, but you can purchase all of those ingredients for under €12-€15 depending on the wine you choose.
My favorite places in Paris for a picnic are under the Eiffel Tower, Place des Vosges (4th arrondissement), and Parc Monceau (8th arrondissement). These spots offer wonderful, grassy areas for lounging about and provide an exceptionally romantic ambiance!
3. People Watch on Rue Montorgueil
Rue Montorgueil is one of the most popular streets in Paris! It’s bustling with quirky shops and boutiques and is lined with hip bars and cafes.
You’ll find locals and tourists alike in this groovy part of the first and second arrondissements, so grab a glass of wine and sit back and relax!
4. Go See the Notre Dame Cathedral All Lit Up
The Notre Dame Cathédrale lights up at night for a stunning display. Photograph its beauty or relish at its impressive architecture and interesting gargoyles.
5. Paris At Night: Dance Under the Eiffel Tower
This is both free, unique, and oh, so much fun! For the perfect nighttime activity for everyone young and old, bring along a few items to make it perfect.
Traveling with your significant other? Make it sensationally romantic with a bottle of wine and some music!
Traveling with your friends? Have your very own dance party with a playlist of your favorite songs! It’s also a little-known fact that just along the banks of the River Seine, you can find live tango dancing in the Jardin Tino Rossi during the warmer months of the year.
No matter who you are traveling with, this is an activity I highly recommend doing in Paris at night.
Romantic Things To Do in Paris At Night
6. Walk Along the Seine
The Seine River is one of the biggest attractions in Paris. Outside of the Eiffel Tower, Le Louvre Museum, and the Arc de Triomphe, this is where tourists flock to for some of the best views of the city.
It’s also one of the most romantic parts of the city, especially at night! Make your way down the river and buy a crepe at one of the many booths for an evening snack.
7. Watch the Eiffel Tower Sparkle
Every hour on the hour the Eiffel Tower presents its famous light show! Hurry to the lawn to watch the glittering lights sparkle for just a mere 5 minutes while its beacon can be seen across all of Paris.
8. Hit a Nightclub
Paris is home to some of the best nightclubs in Europe! You’ll find everything from cool jazz bars to hip disco clubs, all with their own special twist.
Find you and your loved one dancing, rocking out to some live music, or enjoying drinks in a corner booth. Night clubs are a great activity for couples exploring Paris at night!
9. Enjoy Some Wine On A Rooftop Bar
The Paris skyline is an unbeatable sight, but when it’s dazzling at night, there is nowhere else that’s more romantic!
Head to one of the city’s dozens of rooftop bars, preferably one with good views of the Eiffel Tower. Personally, I love Le Rooftop, The 43- Roof Top, and Le Perchoir Marais!
10. Make a Dinner Reservation Inside the Eiffel Tower
Now, this activity obviously comes with a price tag… around €250 per person owing to it being a Michelin-star restaurant. But, it is by far the most incredible experience you can have in the City of Lights.
You can choose between a few different restaurants and bars including 58 Tour Eiffel (the most popular) or the Gustave Eiffel Room on the first floor, Le Jules Verne on the second floor, or the Champagne Bar on the third floor.
Your meal will be of gastronomic perfection and will come with a side of the most incredible views of the city and incredible memories.
This is also an extremely popular location to propose! Be sure to book your table very early, however, tables tend to book up even up to a year in advance!
11. Pop Some Champagne
You’re in Paris! What better way to celebrate being in the City of Romance and Lights than with a bottle of bubbly?
Depending on your budget, grab a cheap bottle at the local supermarket or head to one of the many incredible restaurants in town and order a bottle. (If you’re like me, the cheap bottle will probably taste the same as the expensive one!)
Unique Things To Do in Paris At Night
12. Cruise Along the Seine
A Seine River cruise offers a special perspective of the city that not too many people realize they are missing. Glide under the magnificent bridges and past the city’s top landmarks all while sipping on a glass of wine with a gourmet dinner in front of you!
Celebrating a birthday or a special event? An evening cruise along the River Seine is a great way to explore the city while enjoying the tranquility of not having to do any of the work yourself!
12. See a Cabaret Show
If you like Cabarets, be sure to head to one of the dozens of shows in Paris! The infamous Moulin Rouge, the Lido de Paris, and Crazy Horse Paris are all fantastic spots to catch a show.
If this is something you plan on doing, be sure to pack a fancy dress and smart attire! Anyone who is underdressed will not be permitted inside.
Ticket prices start around €85 and make their way up to €200 if you purchase a show with dinner included. If you are traveling on a budget, this show can be quite expensive, but there is a reason why they are world famous! If you truly love Cabarets, build a Parisian show into your budget.
13. Head to Montmartre
On the right side of the River Seine in the 18th arrondissement sits this charming neighborhood full of cobblestoned streets, cute shops, and lively cafes and restaurants.
This is one of the most popular neighborhoods in Paris, both day and night. So, be sure to pick up a metro card and make your way over to one of the best places to visit in Paris at night!
14. Explore Le Louvre or Musée d’Orsay
On Wednesday nights and the first Saturday of every month, you can explore Le Louvre Museum until 9:45pm! Entrance is also free to all visitors from 6pm-9:45pm on the first Saturday of every month.
Imagine Le Louvre with far fewer visitors, the pyramids are aglow, and you have ample time to gaze at the stunning exhibits without standing elbow to elbow with a stranger. This is by far the best time to experience Le Louvre!
Looking to visit the Musée d’Orsay? Head there on Thursday nights when they also offer late-night hours until 9:45pm for visitors!
15. Climb to the Top of the Arc de Triomphe
In the summer, you can make your way to the top of the Arc de Triomphe for an impressive view over the city!
The climb only takes about 5 minutes and costs around €13 per person but offers sensational Eiffel Tower views of the iconic evening light show. For the best view of the city lights, head up at 10:15pm during the last available climb, when the sky is at its darkest.
Admission closes at 10:15pm but you are allowed to stay at the top until just before 11:00pm!
16. Create Your Own Paris Night Tour
This is one of my favorite things to do in Paris at night! Get a map or use your phone and pick some landmarks, a couple of bars or restaurants, some gardens, and anything else you want to see and start walking.
Personally, I love to take a map and locate some bars and restaurants along with a few famous sites and start by getting a drink at bar, then making my way to a landmark.
Afterward, head to a restaurant for an appetizer then go to a different site. Next, have dinner! You get the picture.
Alternating sites with food and drinks is a great way to socialize while you explore the city. But, doing it at night is the best time to do it since cafes and bars are in full swing and many sites are all lit up.
There are also plenty of guided tours that do this as well, but if you’re trying to visit Paris on a budget then this is a much more cost-friendly activity!
17. Head to a Local Speakeasy
Paris is home to some of the best unique and hidden speakeasies! They have lost their secrecy over time as tourist levels have multiplied, but that makes them no less exciting.
Some have quirky secret entrances which makes them all the more fun. Don’t be surprised if you end up in the wrong place once or twice though, many entrances have been transformed into bookshelves, fake ATMs, and so on!
Some of my favorites include Moonshiner, Mezcaleria, Le Syndicat, and Candelaria!
18. Explore Paris’ Catacombs
Looking for a fun and creepy night underneath Paris surrounded by skulls and bones? Head to the Catacombs of Paris at night!
They are open every day of the week except Mondays until 8:30pm, so you can experience these interesting ossuaries in the most chilling of environments… the dark!
What Can You Do Alone at Night in Paris?
While you can technically do everything I have previously mentioned alone, they may not be as enjoyable without a travel buddy or partner. So, I have come up with a few great ideas that are always fun even if you’re on your own!
✔️ 19. Pamper Yourself at a Spa
What better way to enjoy some alone time than at a spa? In my opinion, a massage to relax the muscles, some soothing essential oils, and some calming music is the perfect way to get me to sleep!
If you really want to pamper yourself, I suggest visiting the renowned Spa at Mandarin Oriental.
Their top-of-the-line service and seemingly endless variety of treatments are sure to leave you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated, making this one of the best things to do in Paris at night alone!
✔️ 20. Wine and Dine the Evening Away
Everywhere you look in Paris you’re going to see elegant restaurants leaving bottles of sophisticated wine on tables left and right. Why can’t that be you?
Either grab a seat at a table or a packed bar of sorts and order whatever you want. It’s not every day that you’re going to be in Paris alone, so treat yourself!
✔️ 21. Catch a Concert or Art Show at Palais Garnier – one of the most popular things to do in Paris at night
Perhaps your friend or life partner has to work or is visiting family… well, now you have the time to see that concert or art show that isn’t really their style!
Use the opportunity of being alone to ignore other people’s opinions and desires. Do only what you want to do and make the absolute most of your time!
Paris is known for its pop-up concerts, mesmerizing Cabaret shows, and infinite amount of temporary art exhibits, so why not go see them for yourself? As one of the best things to do in Paris alone at night, this is quite the way to treat yourself.
Other Things To Do in Paris at Night
Whether you’re trying to visit Paris on a budget, are traveling with your family or alone, here some more of the best things to do in Paris at night!
✔️ 22. Nightclubs, Speakeasies, and Bars
When it comes to Paris nightlife, nightclubs and speakeasies are the most popular of choices for both tourists and locals. Outdoor cafes are also very prevalent, so you’ll never be out of places to go in Paris regardless of the time of year.
Speakeasies are one of the most popular things to do in Paris for young adults, so expect them to be busy, particularly in the summer months. But, the good thing is that nightlife in Paris for tourists is found around every corner, so if you don’t get let inside one bar, there’s usually going to be one right next to it with room.
However, you should keep in mind that restaurants and cafes typically close between 10:00-11:00pm, so be sure to eat enough before you go out drinking for the night!
✔️ 23. Stroll the long hallways of several museums in Paris
Many museums in Paris offer night admittance on certain days of the week, particularly the Musée d’Orsay!
✔️ 24. Have a Late Night Picnic
If it’s late at night in Paris, head to the Eiffel Tower with some food and drinks for a late-night evening picnic under the light show! A bottle of wine isn’t required, particularly if your family is tagging along, though I found that it adds an elegant touch to your Parisian vacation.
As one of the best things to do in Paris at night with family, be sure to stop into one of the many supermarkets in Paris and pick up some French hot cocoa for the kids and some fresh macarons for snacking!
✔️ 25. Enjoy Your Room with a View
If you paid for an accommodation with a good view, head up to your room for a quiet night in to overlook the city and all of its wonderful sites.
Be creative when thinking about things to do in Paris at night!
✔️ 26. Go see where Midnight in Paris was filmed
Better yet, watch the film under the Eiffel Tower!
✔️ 27. Get Ahead on Your Shopping
Who doesn’t love to window shop? And when in Paris, it can be difficult to figure out which souvenir you want to bring home.
Start walking the streets and make a list of all the shops you want to see the next day once they reopen.
This will get you excited to go shopping and it will allow you to better plan your route for getting around the city efficiently.
✔️ 28. Enjoy the Paris City Views from the Tour Montparnasse
You may not know this, but you can experience epic (and I mean EPIC…) panoramic views of the French capital from the Montparnasse Tower.
Head up there at night and grab a drink and an hors d’oeuvre at the beautiful 360 Café (rightfully named for the 360-degree views you get from your seat)!
✔️ 29. Test your Memory at a Parisian Trivia Night
Did you know that cafes, pubs, and bars all over Paris host trivia nights? Similar to the ones you find in the U.S., you can pop in, pick up a trivia sheet, and join the friendly competition with some locals!
Many bars will have this posted on their websites or on flyers inside their establishments, so keep an eye out for which night of the week they’ll be taking place on (Thursdays are popular).
You can also ask the bartender if they know when they’ll be hosting one or if they know anywhere that’s doing one that night!
✔️ 30. Rent a Car for the Evening – one of the best ways to see Paris at night
Another activity you probably haven’t considered doing in Paris at night is renting a car. Now, you’re probably thinking that this wouldn’t be a great idea owing to the heavy amounts of both car and pedestrian traffic you could experience.
Well, technically you would be right, but it’s also one of the best ways to get a good sense of the layout of the city and to see all of the beautiful sites in just a short amount of time.
If you have at least a few nights in Paris, then this is a fantastic way to spend an evening.
✔️ 31. Take a Trip to the Palace of Versailles
Sure, the Palace of Versailles is beautiful any time of the year, but most people only visit during the day. Did you know that Versailles also hosts night shows and tours? Well, they do. and they are phenomenal.
You can witness everything from beautiful fountain shows to royal concerts all within the palace gardens. If this is something you would be interested in, be sure to check for availability as soon as you know your summer dates!
Spots fill up fast and they don’t take place every night.
✔️ 32. Enjoy a Michelin-Star Meal
Now, we’ve already discussed the beautiful Michelin-star restaurant inside of the Eiffel Tower, but that one usually requires reservations upwards of 6 months in advance.
If you didn’t plan that far ahead and you’re leaving for your trip in just a few days, try to make a reservation at Restaurant Guy Savoy, L’Ambroisie, Epicure, or Le Pré Catelan.
There are dozens of others if all of these are full for your dates, so don’t stress too much about finding the “right” restaurant.
✔️ 33. Plan your Next Trip to Paris
Too often when planning a vacation, people get caught up in thinking they need to squeeze every possible activity into their trip and leave barely any time to just relax and enjoy the scenery.
If you make yourself believe that you’ll never return to Paris, then there’s a good chance you won’t. Instead, end your night in Paris by planning what you’re going to do on your next trip to Paris.
It may seem unusual at first, but you’ll be so relieved when you return home knowing that you’re going to travel again soon and there’s no reason to feel guilty about not doing everything on your list.
The travel bug bites hard after every trip for me, which is why I often have several trips on the books at a time. Even if this isn’t something you can budget for at the moment, it will still make you feel good knowing you have a plan in place for future travel!
Tips for Wandering Paris at Night
Whether this is your first or fifth trip to Paris, there are a few tips you should always keep in the back of your mind.
✔️ Keep Your Wits About You
What is better than spending a day exploring Paris and ending it with a night out on the town?!
I totally get it and want you to have fun, but Paris is not perfect. Just like in any city, it’s important to remember basic safety precautions when you are out late in Paris at night!
Always watch the bartender make your drink and never let your drink out of your sight.
Know your way home and don’t get into a state of mind where you can’t get there safely.
Always travel with people you know. If you are a solo traveler, be mindful of who you are hanging out with.
✔️ Keep Your Belongings Close
Unfortunately, pickpockets are a real problem in Paris. This is especially true at nightclubs, bars, restaurants, and in tightly packed metro stations.
In fact, when you are on the metro, they have an automatic announcement that plays every 5-10 minutes in multiple languages telling riders to always keep their personal items visible to them, and never behind them.
They know it’s a problem and are working hard to reduce it by warning both locals and tourists very often. Keep your items in a zipped bag in front of your person at all times!
✔️ Know the Metro Schedule
Nightclubs, speakeasies, and bars may be open well into the early hours of the morning, but that doesn’t mean the metro is!
The Metro in Paris typically stops running around 12:40am during the week and around 1:40am on the weekends, but it can vary. Be sure to get an updated metro schedule before you start drinking the night away if you are a long walk from your accommodation.
I do NOT recommend getting into a taxi or cab late at night in Paris. It’s well known for scammers and thievery and is not a safe bet to get you home!
✔️ Be Prepared For Cooler Weather
Even in the summer, darkness brings cooler weather in Paris. If you are planning on hitting the town late at night, be sure to bring along a warm layer. Always check the weather forecast before heading out since nighttime summer showers are quite common in Paris!
✔️ Get A Map
Even in Paris where everything is extremely well marked, having a map is always a good idea. You can purchase a Paris travel guide that includes a map, or simply take a screenshot on your phone. Want to start planning your trip now? Check out this city map!

Is Paris Beautiful At Night?
It isn’t difficult to notice that Paris is one of the most beautiful cities in the world with its stunning architecture, striking landmarks, and sensational atmosphere.
But, seeing Paris at night is an entirely different world!
The city’s interrupted skyline shimmers with glittery lights and a romantic ambiance. Sipping wine on the bank of the River Seine, dancing the night away under the stars, and even enjoying a simple picnic under the Eiffel Tower are all better at night.
If you don’t believe me, you’ll just have to see for yourself! I recommend reading our article on The Best Time to Visit Paris for everything you’ll need to know so you can plan your trip based on your personal preferences.
Is Paris Unsafe at Night?
Just like any city, you need to keep your wits about you at all times.
Paris has its good and bad parts after dark, but you really don’t need to worry very much. The sketchy parts aren’t in areas that any tourist would feel they need to stroll down, so just pay attention to staying in well-lit areas when walking home.
The safest parts of town are actually where you’ll find the most people and tourists. Stay where the cafes and bars are brightly lit such as in Le Marais and the Latin Quarter.
Avoid dark alleyways and streets and be cautious around Les Halles. It was more commonly recognized as a spot for drug use and sales but is now regularly walked by police. Even so, it’s probably not an area you should go to, especially after a night of drinking.
Otherwise, Paris is very safe. The largest concern you may have is from pickpocketers. But again, just keep your belongings closed up and on the front of your person and you shouldn’t have any problems.
Can you Walk Around Paris at Night?
In short, yes. Paris is safe to roam at night as long as you follow a few simple rules.
✔️ First, stay in brightly lit areas. After dark is not the time you want to try to find a shop down some alleyway.
✔️ If possible, stay with a group. If you are traveling solo, just be mindful of people asking to walk you home. That’s never a good idea.
Instead, say you are waiting for a friend and that they will be there shortly. Walk home through the most touristy and well-lit parts of town, even if it takes you a little bit longer.
Paris is no more dangerous than any city in Europe, even at night. Overall, I highly recommend enjoying some time strolling the city and taking in its beautiful light displays and scenery! Just use caution and be mindful of your whereabouts while you do so.
Is Paris a Clubbing City?
Paris is definitely a clubbing city! The nightlife in Paris is absolutely legendary, with dozens of bars and clubs located throughout the city. Whether you’re looking for an intimate jazz session or a high-energy techno party, there’s sure to be something that suits your tastes.
In addition to the wide range of establishments available, one of the best things about Paris’s clubbing scene is that it caters to a diverse range of patrons. You can find plenty of places where people of all ages and backgrounds come together to have a great time!
If you’re looking for an incredible night out in Paris, be sure to check out the city’s many popular clubs and bars.
What To Do in Paris after Dinner?
After a wonderful meal in the French capital’s delectable food scene, you’ll be free to do almost any of the aforementioned activities in this article.
From romantic walks along the River Seine to evening cabaret shows and even night tours of the Parisian Catacombs, there is plenty to do in Paris after dinner!
What Should I Avoid in Paris?
Regardless of whether it is day or night, there are a few things that you should probably avoid in Paris.
✔️ Walking in the bike lanes
This is a big no! Paris is covered in cyclists and walking in the bike lane not only endangers yourself, but also other people. Stay on the sidewalks, please!
✔️ Falling for Scams
Don’t sign petitions, don’t use streetside ATMs, don’t take pictures for the locals, don’t exchange money on the streets, don’t buy tickets to attractions on the streets, don’t play any street games, and don’t leave your valuables in plain sight.
Paris is notorious for pickpockets and petty theft, so don’t fall for any street scams during your visit!
✔️ Trying to Get Lunch Between 1:00 and 3:00 PM.
Between these hours every day in Paris, all restaurants, cafes, and most bars shut down for lunch. This is considered “family time” during the day, so be sure to eat a big breakfast and have snacks with you to hold you over until dinner.
✔️ Being Rude
Contrary to popular belief, Parisians do NOT hate Americans. But, just like anywhere in the world, they DO hate rude people and they won’t be afraid to tell you so.
Be kind, polite, and practice your French before you get there, and I can practically guarantee you’ll have a very pleasant experience with the locals.
How to Get to Paris
✔️ By Plane
For anyone traveling outside of Europe, this is going to be your only method of transportation into Paris unless you plan on doing a multi-city trip and finishing the last leg of your journey via train.
Flights into Paris can be expensive, but there are a few tips that will help you find reasonably-priced flights into either Charles de Gaulle Airport or Orly Airport.
✔️ First, book as far in advance as you possibly can. As soon as you know what dates you will be traveling, you should be booking your flights.
Unlike domestic flights that drop between 3-6 weeks before travel, international flights gradually increase over time and rarely drop significantly.
✔️ Secondly, be flexible with your travel season. Peak season in Paris runs between June and September so this is when flights will be the most expensive. Although, this is also when Paris is at its prettiest!
You can expect to find blooming flowers, warm weather, and bright sunshine during these months.
✔️ Lastly, fly midweek. Flying to Paris on a Friday or Saturday is a big no-no if you are traveling to Paris on a budget.
Instead, search for and book flights on Monday evenings and Tuesday mornings. Flight prices have dropped for the week by this time and many people don’t have the option of traveling midweek, so you’ll save a lot of money by doing this.
✔️ By Train
Depending on where you are in Europe, I highly recommend taking the train to Paris!
It is far more scenic, affordable, and allows you to skip all the chaos of the airport. To book your train tickets, simply go to Omio and fill in your information to see the available trains and schedules.
However, be sure to look up how long the train ride is and if you’ll need to switch trains at any point. If you aren’t good on trains for a long period of time or you aren’t very savvy with changing lines, then flying might be a better option for you.
