Buyer’s Guide

History/Overview

The BMW 4 Series is the car that was for decades known as the 3 Series coupe before getting split off with its own name for the previous generation. That said, the two models are still very closely related, so like the 3 Series, the 4 Series is all-new for 2021 in coupe and convertible form.

What’s New

A new chassis and new styling that showcases the controversial new BMW kidney grilles, as well as a new interior, new tech, and revised versions of the previously available engines.

Available Trims

Rather than traditional trim levels, BMW offers its vehicles based on the engine. While the larger engine may be somewhat better equipped, options allow most of the same features on all. The 2021 BMW 4 Series is offered in 430i xDrive and M440i xDrive forms in coupe and convertible. The former offers 255 hp from a 2.0L turbo-four with the latter 382 hp from a 3.0L twin-turbo inline-six. Both have an eight-speed auto with all-wheel drive.

Standard Features

18-inch alloys are standard, as is black leatherette interior upholstery. A leather sport steering wheel is included along with variable sport steering, run flat tires, a sunroof, auto-dimming inside and outside mirrors, power seats with memory, heated front seats, parking sensors, automatic climate control, radar cruise, LED lights, and forward collision warning.

M440i adds real leather seating, a heated wheel, and M sports features like an M steering wheel, M Sport suspension, M Sport brakes, and M Sport rear differential.

Key Options

Options on 430i include larger wheels and a wide range of leather interior choices. A Premium Essential package adds adjustable lumbar, proximity key, and wireless phone charging. Advanced Driver Assistance adds a dashcam recorder, Driving Assistant Professional, Surround View, and Traffic Jam Assistant. Premium Enhanced comes with Premium Essential plus head-up display, Live Cockpit Professional, heated wheel, and automatic trunk. Premium Excellence adds Enhanced plus leather seating, Driver Assistance, adjustable side bolsters, leather dash, Harman Kardon Audio, and heated wheel.

M440i adds the same Driver Assistance package. Premium enhanced offers Premium Enhanced from 430i plus Harman/Kardon Audio, and the Premium Excellence package is available, adding gesture control to the infotainment.

Fuel Economy

The BMW 430i xDrive offers 10.0 L/100 km city, 7.1 highway, while M440i offers an estimated 10.5/7.7.

Competition

The BMW coupes and convertibles compete with Audi’s A5 as well as the Mercedes-Benz C Class. Other alternatives include the Lexus RC lineup, Jaguar F-Type, and Infiniti Q60.
