2020 BMW 520i Sport Review – Go Flat Out PH
The BMW 5 Series has always been the “perfectly balanced” BMW in my eyes, it is bigger than the 3 series and gives you a choice of being the driver or being driven, unlike the 7 series which is really best enjoyed as a passenger unless you’re doing a cameo in a rap video, but I digress. Since its launch in 1972, the 5 Series has been a benchmark for the midsize executive luxury car market. For this review, we take a look at the 2020 BMW 520i Sport, a new entry-level variant of the 5 Series that was introduced in mid-2020.
As the 520i classification denotes, this variant is powered by a 2.0-liter inline-4 turbo petrol engine that produces 184 HP and 290 Nm of torque mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. Now on paper, it may not seem like much for a car this size but the 520i Sport is definitely no slouch.
In Comfort mode, the car already has a snappy response in acceleration but switching to Sport mode, you immediately start to realize that the “Sport” in its name isn’t just a word used to differentiate the different 5 Series variants. The car really comes to life whenever you give it the chance to do so, be it in a clear straight road or through a bunch of twists and turn, all the while, keeping its poise and refinement inside due to the excellent noise suppression. With its precise and responsive steering, it’s a real joy to drive. It also won’t break the bank whether you’re sitting in traffic or on the highway since I was able to achieve a good fuel economy figure of as much as 11.23 km/l.
Behind the wheel, you have sports car confidence while being treated to very comfortable seats and a spacious cabin. Sitting in the driver’s seat, you are met with the typical BMW layout where nothing feels out of place or cluttered in terms of controls and buttons. The iDrive infotainment is fully equipped with Apple CarPlay and works hand in hand with the BMW Live Cockpit Plus partly-digital instrument cluster. The infotainment system is very straightforward and easy to use and mainly controlled by the rotary knob but can also be accessed via the touch screen display.
But if you want to talk about the feeling of luxury, allow yourself to be driven and take a seat in the rear cabin. Rear seat space is generous for tall adults. In addition, rear occupants get to enjoy manually-adjustable side window shades and a powered rear sunshade. The feeling of privacy and luxury is further heightened with the excellent-sounding HiFi sound system and configurable LED ambient lighting.
Being stylish doesn’t just stay inside the BMW 520i Sport but it also extends to the exterior as well with its 19 inch V-spoke style alloy wheels, aggressive front end design, LED headlights and LED fog lights. It all held together by that iconic kidney grille and sporty touches that extend all the way past that signature Hofmeister Kink.
Overall, the new 2020 BMW 520i Sport is something I would call a sporty luxury sedan that can easily be appreciated both behind the wheel and at the back seats. There’s simply no other luxury midsize sedan at this price point that offers both driving pleasure and the comfort of a limousine. Retailing at P4,290,000 or P3,940,000 with current promos in place, the BMW 520i Sport is also extremely competitively priced and it comes with BMW’s segment-leading 5-year or 200,000-kilometer manufacturer’s warranty.
