Next Level Performance Meets Precision Engineering
There are several engine options available for the 2020 BMW 5 Series. One thing that may help you understand drivetrain differences is knowing xDrive is BMW’s intelligent all-wheel drive system. 5 Series models without xDrive feature rear-wheel drive for a more traditional driving experience.
The 530i and the 530i xDrive feature a 2.0L TwinPower Turbo inline 4 cylinder engine. This 16-valve 2.0L engine uses a twin-scroll turbocharger with variable valve control technology to create 248 horsepower. High-precision direct injection combines with the variable Double-VANOS and Valvetronic technology in this advanced powertrain. This engine achieves a cruise from 0-60 mph in only 5.8 seconds in the 530i xDrive. Hybrid options for the new model year are the 530e and the 530e xDrive.
Both hybrid 2020 BMW 5 Series models feature a 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline 4-cylinder with integrated electric motor. This AC Synchronous Electric Motor produces 111 E-Drive Motor Horsepower. The 2.0L engine produces 180 horsepower. This electric motor and gas engine combination creates a fun plug-in hybrid driving experience without sacrificing efficiency.
The 540i and 540i xDrive are the next gasoline-powered step up from the 530i trim level. Featuring a TwinPower Turbo inline 6-cylinder engine, the 540i cranks out 335 horsepower with 331 lb-ft of torque. This enables the 540i xDrive to scoot from 0-60 in only 4.6 seconds.
The most powerful 2020 BMW 5 Series also boasts the legendary M performance endorsement. BMW’s M Performance TwinPower Turbo V-8 engine produces 523 horsepower with 553 lb-ft of torque in the M550i xDrive. This 4.4L V8 engine combines with an 8-speed sport automatic transmission featuring steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters. It will only take 3.6 seconds to get from 0-60 mph in the M550i xDrive thanks to its powerful engine.
