2012 BMW R1200R

According to initial reports, BMW will keep their recently upgraded R1200R completely unchanged for 2012. As of 2011, the ‘roadster’ R-bike features the twin-cam (DOHC) boxer engine that was available on the R1200GS and R1200RT in 2010 and was originally developed from the engine of the exotic BMW HP2 Sport. Unfortunately, BMW has not released specific pricing information at this time so we don’t know how the sticker price will compare relative to the 2011 R1200R but we anticipate a slight increase in price along with the inclusion of ABS as standard on all R 1200 R’s (for the 2012 model year) BMW has made ABS standard on all of their motorcycles. If you haven’t checked out the naked R-bike in a little while the big news, in addition to the new engine, is that the R1200R is also available in a “Classic” version.

To appeal to the fans of retro bikes, BMW has created a special version of their R 1200 R roadster and called it the R 1200 R Classic. The first thing that you will notice about the Classic is that alloy wheels have been replaced by shiny spoke wheels. To properly accentuate the dynamic look of these spoke wheels, the Classic will also be equipped with a chrome exhaust and chrome mirrors. A wide racing stripe runs down the axis of the motorcycle and, again, recalls the sporty cafe racers of decades past.

The standard (non-Classic) version of the 2012 R1200R will feature some subtle design changes to differentiate it from R1200R’s from years past. The engine and subframe will be black on standard 2012 R12R’s (silver on the Classic) with dark grey valve covers to complement the darker color palette. Standard 2012 12R’s will also come with wheels that feature a sporty spoke pattern similar to the wheels used on the BMW K1300S. Additionally, the taillight assembly has also been revised to resemble that of the K13S and to create a more streamlined look for the back of the motorcycle. Finally, the swingarm and front A-arm are finished in a darker shade of grey, compared to the earlier R1200R’s, to again fit with the darker 2012 color schemes.

One thing to note on the close up image of the handlebars is that there appears to be an ESA (Electronic Suspension Adjustment) button on the left combination switch. Before 2011, ESA was available on a number of big BMW’s such as the R12GS, RT and K-bikes but R12R’s now also have the option of Electronic Suspension Adjsutment (not available on R1200R’s equipped with the low-suspension option). With ESA equipped, owners of a new 2012 R12R will be able to dial-in their suspension settings with a few taps of a button instead of struggling with the wrenchs, knobs and manual adjustments typically associated with suspension tweaking. The 2012 R1200R will also continue to feature the traditional BMW turn signal switches that incorporate buttons on both left and right combi switches. We still believe in these style switches and are happy that BMW has kept it on their most traditional R-bike.

That’s all the info we have for now, but please enjoy the following images. We will update this page as more information becomes available in the coming months, but we expect to take delivery of the first 2012 R1200R’s in the fall of 2011. If you would like to put your name on a pre-order list to get one of the first 12R’s or to spec one out exactly as you want please call our sales department at 415-503-9944 or shoot us an e-mail at [email protected].
